there is a contingent of Shreveport bars that are boycotting all the local breweries because they are mad about the taprooms "stealing" their business
All they are doing is opening the door for more places to steal their business - the places that choose to carry the local brews.
Honestly, I prefer taprooms over breweries, usually. Taprooms carry a bigger variety of beers from many different breweries. Bars need to adjust, because craft beer is only going to get more popular, and they need to realize that they can make more money selling a local craft beer than they can a BMC beer.
Some breweries offer guest taps, though, which is cool. Fat Head's usually has more non-Fat Head beers than beers brewed in house. That works out for them, because it gives them more beer to distribute to taprooms and bars.

ingredients they believe in is definitely real. It's crazy how a metro population or 800k or so has two breweries, one of which is mediocre at best and the other which seems to be following in their lead of gimmicky names and bad product.
So youve already written off a brewery that hasnt even opened? Seems short sighted. Parish opened with canebrake and south coast, it was months before they made grand reserve and even longer before ghost was born.

Care to share the names of the bars that are boycotting the breweries?

For real. I tried their DIPA at Zapps, and while it wasn't mind blowing, it was certainly a good first effort. I think once they dial in their recipe it will be a good beer. I think it's only fair to give them a few months to get off the ground before trying to bury a new brewery.

Yet people still wonder if the market is over-saturated. It is just getting started.
In Portland, we have a new brewery open about once a month. Most of them are neighborhood brewpubs and if they don't produce outstanding stuff, they stay small. If they produce great beer, they get noticed and grow. Most of them do succeed, though - by succeed, I mean that they stay in business as a local brewpub.

Is that legal in the in LA ? Pretty sure a production brewery can't do that.

Doesn't Courtyard offer guest taps?
I think it's a great idea because they can give patrons the best of both worlds and it frees up kegs to distribute to taprooms.
It's surprising to me how so many breweries and taprooms partner up and actually help each other out, rather than try to sabotage each other. I think they understand that feuding between two breweries doesn't help anybody out, and that the brewers can learn from each other.

They chose southern craft because it represents who they are, what they believe in, and more importantly where their ingredients come from.
I haven't had their beers, but if the beers are tasty, then the name of the brewery or the beers doesn't matter. I do find it interesting that they are focusing on using Southern ingredients. I'm anxious to try their IPA using Cascade hops grown in the south. Curious how their cascades differ from the Northeast. I do wonder, though, are they ONLY using southern ingredients, or is that more of a preference? I would be concerned they may limit themselves to a range of beers or flavors they can produce.
Personally, i don't care for the brewery names Urban South - Sounds like a hipster clothing line nor do i care for the name Southern Craft - sounds too generic to me. But if they are making good beers it doesn't matter.

Their red stick rye and pompous pelican are hits already
Haven't had either. And i don't consider either of these 2 beers gimmicky as another was saying. Gimmicky would be using a high adjunct beers. Their rye won 2nd at NHC which is pretty impressive. And i'm waiting to try pompous pelican.

Interesting. I assume you are good friends with the guys. I've only met one of them in passing. Are they nailing down their brewhouse setup?
On a slightly related topic: I think the only thing you need to do to have a successful brewery is brew fantastic beer, and know your costs. If you have a strong game plan for your brewery and its future, and you focus on making each beer the best beer it can be, and not accepting a bad batch to be distributed, then you will succeed in the business IMO. My hope is that Southern Craft, Urban South, Wayward Owl, etc... make the brewery be about the beer and not about the business, meaning they are more concerned with a quality product than the bottom line. I think that is what is missing in many breweries opening up around the country. Too many see it as a quick growth market and think they can get rich quick, but either A) don't know how to brew good beer or B) don't know how to manage their business. There is a balance, but quality should never suffer to save $'s. Just focus on making beers with quality ingredients, know your system, know your processes, treat your yeasts right, and make a damn fine product, then the money will come in, as long as you are smart about it.

Yes, but they are considered a nano brewery and their kegs don't leave. Things are a little different down here in the south. We have these crooked things called politicians. We also like football with defense.

We have these liberal things called politicians. They don't care what you do with your brewery, as long as you offer non-gender specific bathrooms.

I'd keep waiting. I'm not going to write them off, but PP wasn't my kind of DIPA. But I'm going to first assume they will adjust some things as this was their first large scale production batch of it.

The Cub is the ring leader. Whats On Tap is another. I've been told there are about 6 or 7 but have heard a bunch of names but none of those have been confirmed like The Cub and WOT.

A place specializing in beer is going to "boycott" all local brews from the town in which they are located?

Sounds like a hip hop clothing line or even recording company out of Atlanta, to me.

Which one? Didn't one of the owners' family own Fat Harry's, Fat Harry?
I tried the IPA and liked it very much.
