Is this the place next to the strip club on TC at 610?

exactly. It is not going to blow your socks off but it is good old school cheap tex-mex. It is easy for me to get to as well.

Birria tacos
Redfish
Tampiquena
Fajita salad
Brisket nachos
Fajitas
Carnitas

The only thing I haven't been impressed with there are the ceviches.

You went to the wrong Ninfa's for sure

First thing I thought on reading this. I also thought maybe the Galleria isn't the best place to go for Mexican.

Thank you for the effort, I appreciated it.
I've been gone for 35 years and two things resonated with me.
Ninfas was great, but the thing I miss most from her restaurants is the green sauce. The "tacos al carbon" and queso suiso were my favorites.

That you started with Los Tios had me literally laughing out loud. So, they are still around and still serving their so called Chili con queso. Ten years of eating at the place oUt west (back then it WAS out west) we never could figure out why the puffed up corn tortilla with a cheese cover was called that. That it still is - remains a mystery

TulaneLSU,

Glad to hear of your marvelous adventures on your own! It is good to hear you are getting out from mother’s wing. Please let this serve as a hearty reminder that I am owed two tickets on the first poor-boy tour of New Orleans when you have acquired a new means of locomotion, after the one of my stock choices paid off for you and mother. I do so look forward to it, and will give it a lengthy Tigerdroppings review!

As always, give my best wishes to Mother.

Yours in Christ,
Upperdecker

It’s to my understanding The Original Ninfa's On Navigation is not affiliated with the other Ninfa’s. Thought I read there was a falling out within the family or along those lines back in the 70’s.

I will get downvoted into oblivion for this but I have yet to find cheese enchiladas that rival Pappasitos. I grew up in Houston and the only others that would compare would be Casa Juan in Richmond (RIP) back in the 70s.

You won’t hear any argument from me on Pappasitos cheese enchiladas. I seriously crave those enchiladas on the regular and make sure when I travel to Houston or Atlanta I swing by and order the cheese enchilada and skirt steak combo to satisfy my craving. Not sure why so many people on this board frown on those Pappas Restaurant, Inc. businesses. I’d be beyond happy if Mobile, AL had a Pappasitos. The Mexican food in this city is terrible and it’s just as bad in Baton Rouge. I’ve literally tried to replicate their cheese enchiladas over 100 times and I can’t nail it. No earthly idea why a cheese enchilada could be so hard to recreate but I can’t do it. Made plenty of tasty enchiladas trying but I can’t make them like Pappasitos. I just got back from a two week sales trip traveling along I-10 through New Mexico, Arizona, and Southern California. I like that regions Mexican food too, but to me Houston has the best Mexican food in the country. Seems like if you know where to go in that Houston metro you can find a variety of excellent Mexican restaurants preparing many different styles of Mexican food. Everything from Tex Mex, authentic simple cooked comfort dishes from Mexico, to the west coast kind that incorporates a lot of seafood in their preparations of it. But circling back to Pappasitos cheese enchiladas I absolutely love and crave them. Two of those and I’m stuffed and happy.

I love Pappas establishments…I cried a little inside when COVID killed Yia Yia Mary’s and Little Pappas on Shepherd…though Little Pappas is reopening soon as a more upscale/smarter seafood concept so there is hope.

Will have to try that next time I am near the Pappacitos. We used to go to Pappadeaux's, but I think I've only been to the Pappacitos in Atlanta once. Atlanta now has a lot of good Mexican food, if you are willing to forego the huge margaritas and free chips and dip and instead seek out the tiendas with little abuelas in the back making tamales, tacos, tortas, gorditas, sopes, and other good stuff.

El Tiempo

Lots of love for this place.
Is there more than one location?
Differences depending on location?

The review of El Tiempo Cantina in the Woodlands from someone who lives there and I trust said:
“Expensive; consistently bad drinks (margaritas made with sour mix). But great steak fajitas”.

Maybe this is a different restaurant.

2/3 is right on. I have never had a problem with their drinks, they have expanded so maybe location dependent but i doubt it.

El Tiempo is really testing people's willingness to pay, IMO. For the price, you can eat at some of Houston's best restaurants. The problem you will never find an EL Tiempo that is slow no matter their price increases.

I have explored the menu over the last decade or so, they do a lot of things really well.

i only really go if someone else is buying. Good Co, Lupe, teotihuacan, ect are getting my money over el tiempo in the biden era

I read many articles ahead of time and had a detailed plan to eat at ten of Houston’s best known and rated Mexican restaurants each day. But it was not meant to be. After being hit by the car, I also developed a case of gastrointestinal problems which sidelined me for much of day three. I spent much of my morning and midday on our last full day in Houston in our hotel’s spacious bathroom. But I was determined not to allow my misery and discomfort to cut short the quality of this list. I literally sucked it up to get to three Mexican restaurants that evening. It was a poor choice because the last thing my stomach needed was more Mexican food.

Got it.
They are particular about their margs for sure.
I will be back out there next month. I may give it a try.

Don’t go to El Tiempo unless it’s fajita Wednesday.

Or skip the fajitas and order the carnitas old school.

The old school carnitas are fantastic. But we order fajitas every time to go with them.

Fajitas and carnitas is a varsity level move.

This could be controversial but I also like ordering the veggie fajitas to complement whatever meat is in the table…cilantro rice and black beans only get me so far.

I try to only go during lunch. Las Vegas plate for $19.99 or 1/2lb Carnitas for $19 on lunch menu.

100% Taquito.

Recommend the mini quesadillas (Asada beef and garlic shrimp are the best)

Good tortilla soup, little cheesy

Great tres leches
