When I was a boy, my entire family could eat at the Panchos on Florida Blvd in Baton Rouge and then catch a movie at the Broadmoor Theater next door for less than $20.

Great work TulaneLSU. You’re a gem.

We still buy it at wally world and kroger

Good stuff Most of this container is in the fridge right now. I will think of you when I heat some up and have it with white corn chips tonight. I bet you can go to Wally World in Monroe and get you some too.

How many times did I eat at the Pancho's on Nicholson in the 70's and 80's, man it brings back memories.

Meridian Dog mentioned the guacamole which was excellent, but so was their Pico de Gallo. Always fresh and perfect on top of all that cheese and tostados.

3. Beef tamale

Another old standard, as a child I would usually ask the waitress to load my second plate with 12 beef tamales, one representing each of the disciples. Again, the recipe and ingredients used today are faithful to the original. Some criticize these for being dry, but I think they are excellent. Because husks slow me down, I have always preferred this non-husk tamale so as not to slow down my eating.

Scrolled through the pictures of the food. The beef tamale looks exactly like the chalupa.

Not trying to pick on you Otis, but you threw a craving on me and so I went to the kitchen and built myself some chips and queso.

You really need to go to Wally World and get you some Pancho's white queso. It's really good.

You have the same picture for the chalupas and beef tamale.

Do better.

MD, there’s a Poncho’s Queso website. It has a store locator. Local Walmart, Jr had both the original and white versions. About to chow down on the original.

Friend I'm honored and blessed to have been mentioned by name in this glorious review of one my all time favorite restaurants. I too was a huge fan of the sopapillas, in fact Panchos is where I first discovered this wonderful after dinner treat.

Some fine work here especially the historical context. I would have enjoyed joining you for lunch, but there will be another time. I hope you enjoy the remainder of your stay in Houston, friend.

Friends,

TejasHorn, time machines are important and there are fewer and fewer of them. I mourn the loss of so many places of my past and I will make a pilgrimage of a thousand miles to remember.

geauxtigers87, what a well constructed, pithy thought.

GT3324, in my understanding of IgE immunology one would need to use a lab formula honey that preserved certain proteins in the pollen, that are destroyed during the natural honey making process, that would infer immunity to certain environmental allergens. Still, this would not help with a bee sting allergy because an allergy to the venom in the sting is an allergy to the constituent elements of the venom which consist of phospholipase-A2, apamin, histamine, melittin, MCD peptide, and hyaluronidase. Perhaps your friend became an immunologist and learned this lesson during his schooling.

t00fe, I visited Tio Trompo this morning after a visit to Central Market. One of our Food Board fellows referred me there after reading TulaneLSU's Top 10 Mexican eateries of Houston. I may have to make an edit because it was quite good. Top 10 good? I am still tabulating its final score to see if it is good enough. It will be close. Nonetheless, Pancho's is excellent in its own regard.

Legion, always too kind.

juiceisloose, your photo always makes me smile.

BigBinBR, no. They are, however, after me, but not as aggressively as before.

MeridianDog, I only vaguely remember their guacamole, but now that you mention it, the mind's roots are finding that memory if only a piece of it. I was too young to appreciate guacamole and never got it. I do not remember seeing it available yesterday on the hot line. Perhaps it was and I was so overcome by the flood of memories that I missed it. But I think I would remember seeing it. I assume they do not have it as this Houston/Humble location. We, including OTIS and balls, should consider making the trip to Fort Worth to visit the other Pancho's. Is it superior to Houston's? That old Dallas vs. Houston rivalry pokes out its head again.

MasterDigger, your eye is keen. People in vehicles often forget that we are part of a community and one person is not better than the other. As part of my grocery research project I have undertaken, I visited several HEB groceries today. While there, a woman in a Mercedes impolitely pulled in front of me and parked in a handicap spot. I found a spot very close to her and, due to how efficient I am at entering and exiting vehicles, caught up to her. She was wearing exercise clothing and clearly had no physical disability. I said, "You have no reason to park in handicapped spot." She responded, "Mind your business." That is the mindset of so many today. Mind your business -- while they abuse the system. People with real physical handicaps are injured by abusers like that woman.

GotBlaze, thank you for the GIF

Paul Allen, I do believe the Pancho's Queso is a different brand from Pancho's Mexican Buffet. It has a different logo, different font, and is a national brand available at both Walmart and Sam's. I have gotten it before at Sam's. It is okay. The queso is definitively not the queso that Pancho's Mexican Buffet serves.

Tygerfan, what a lovely photo.

Salamander, that sounds like a lovely night out. I hope you are building new memories like that one every day.

GrisGris, thank you for pointing out my error. I have been operating on very limited sleep lately. It is fixed.

Tiger Ryno, let's make a roadtrip with Otis, balls, and MeridianDog to Fort Worth to try the other Pancho's.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

It’s the same dip from the Memphis Poncho’s.

Friend,

Your link further proves the point. Pancho's Queso originated with the restaurant of the same name, which was founded by Louis Jack Berger and his father. Their first restaurant opened in West Memphis, AR in 1956. Pancho's Mexican Buffet, on the other hand, opened in El Paso in 1958. Its founder is Jesse Arrambide. This etymology explains the different logos and type font between the two separate companies.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Yep. The Memphis Ponchos, the dip I recall, is the same. But doesn’t appear to be associated with the buffet establishment. The current Ponchos queso is the original Memshis recipe, though.

Friend,

You certainly did not and my most humble of apologies to you. Is eating 35 items gluttonous? My body requires a lot of energy, as today I walked 15 miles in the heat of Houston. I needed every last calorie from yesterday. But if you desire I will go on a week long fast when I return home.

The buffet restaurant group is completely separate from the Memphis based Ponchos entity. Carry on... You were absolutely correct.

Friend,

I am certainly in no position to tell anyone how to live their life. But yes, I would say according to Christian teachings, 35 items in one sitting would be gluttony. Including this:

quote:

seven bowls of potato soup, three bowls of broccoli soup, four Caesar salads, four loaves of pumpernickel bread, one house salad, two baked potatoes, two sides of vegetables, a filet, a sirloin, and six Coke Zeros.

This is more food than most people eat in a week.

P.S. given your love for New Orleans style Italian food, I would invite you to visit Sal and Judy’s. I believe it would rise to the very top of your list.

Sincerely,
TCO.

The Bossier City Pancho's was the first (and for a long time only) restaurant that my frugal family visited other than an occasional McDonald's stop and a birthday trip to Pizza Inn.

The line back in the 70s was often to the door. I recall that they had a window along they way where adults could get a margarita or beer. Our parents never ordered there, and I always figured the people who did must be rich.

Spouse and I visited the Shreveport (Mansfield Rd.) location in the 90s. It was okay but lacked the decor and charm of the OG in Bossier. I do recall the waitress bringing chips and bragging, "They hot! They just came out the grease!"

The flag-raising concept should be adopted at all levels of dining. Brocato's in Shreveport had a similar system, where you pushed a button that lit a light by your table and in the back to alert your waiter.
