Tula Tacos & Amigos

Grand opening was today; anyone check it out yet? Had it for lunch and it was great. Fresh handmade corn and flour tortillas.

Very reasonable prices. For those of you who frequented Urbanos (out of business), the cost of one Urbanos taco gets you two at Tula.

I'll check it out soon. Urbanos chose a bad location (rent wise) for a taco place. People aren't likely to pay a premium for tacos.

My wife and I have been keeping an eye on it. We're pretty excited about it. I'm going to try to convince her to go tomorrow night

I tried one of each: al pastor, carnitas, frijoles.

Lunch buddy had a chile shrimp that looked pretty good. Owner recommended I try the birria next time (was his personal favorite).

Funny enough, without eating one of the following I'd probably recommend crispy oyster/fish, or the rajas & the papas. I ordered the pastor/carnitas because those are fairly standard and I wanted to establish a baseline (shite a fat person says for 500).

Looking forward to going back.

Out of curiosity, how big were the tacos? Was 3 too many or would 2 not be enough at lunch?

Going to try this place soon, excited it’s now open.

Pretty pumped for this and can't wait to try it, I love that more stuff is being added downtown. They actually opened up Friday evening and posted about it on Facebook, we were going to go try it but when we drove by around 8:15 it looked pretty packed.

ETA: Is this the same guy who has Central & Pops?

I only clicked this thread because the name is similar to a new restaurant in Atlanta (so I know nothing about the place)...

But that place has good branding and looks like it might be well set up for franchising.

The tortillas are a bit bigger than the pre-made corn tortillas you see at grocery stores. I think two (a single order) would be enough for a lunch meal, but three would be the sweet spot.

What sucks is they come in orders of two though. I don't believe you can order a single taco a la carte. If you go with someone, coordinate with a taco co-pilot and exchange extra tacos.

I believe ownership is spread out among owners of Pop's, Central Pizza, Greenroom, and maybe one or two other business partners.

Their other two places are pretty "hipster" (which tends to lend itself toward "local"), I don't think they are looking to go into the franchising route.

kinda … Gus Rezende is business partners with BJ Crist in Social Entertainment, and they just opened Tula. Together they co-own Dix, Tropical Smoothie, and Central Pizza. Collin Cormier (owner of Pops) is just 1 of 4 partners in Central Pizza. Before Pop's, Collin had the Viva La Waffle food truck. Bunch of young successful entrepreneurs making shite happen in Laffy

Hipster/local is being franchised in the rest of the country, why not there?

Just doesn't seem like their style. The owners own multiple ventures in Lafayette, none of which have been franchised to my knowledge.

Fresh. They call it smashed avocado, but it tasted like traditional guac (just not mixed into a paste). They serve with three fried tortilla shells (whole). I think one more shell is needed, especially if you're sharing.
