Planning a trip to austin later this summer with the wife. Usually we just hop around eating and drinking during the day when on vacation. Wanted to get advice from FDB on where we should go.

TIA. Any other advice is appreciated as well.

I third Jester King.

At least once every couple of weeks there's an Austin eats recommendation thread. Do a search and you'll find a couple. I will say you should stop at the Whip-In. We went there twice in three days.

And Franklin Barbecue is worth standing in line for. Just bring a folding chair, a book and some cash (they'll come by and sell you soft drinks and beer).

South Congress Cafe

24 Dinner for late night (or anytime)

La Barbeque, although Louis Mueller in Taylor (1 hr drive) is the best BBQ in the area

Casa Columbia has great South American food

Polvol's on S. 1st for Mexican

Whip In for good beer and Indian/Bar food

Jester King is a great but its pretty toasty out there in the summer and I'm not sure there is any indoor seating. There is a huge covered outdoor pavilion.

Whip In is a must for me when in Austin. I prefer to go in the evenings rather than at lunch.

Easy Tiger (beers and good food), Bangers (beers and good food), East Side King for great asian food (several food truck locations...I like the one at Liberty Bar), Curra's for mexican....its near Whip In so....Amy's Ice Cream,

Tacos....Veracruz All Natural is great....maybe better than Torchy's....go to Torchy's too and Mellizoz's is my other favorite.....all food trucks by the way.....Austin Food trucks are usually not trucks. They are trailers that have permanent locations in Food Trailer Parks.... Right next to Mellizoz's is Gordoughs Donuts which is really good too.

BBQ- Franklins if you want to stand in line....Muellers and La Barbecue are arguably as good.

My favorite throwback/ retro austin bar is Don's Depot.

For an excellent happy hour, go to Firehouse across the street from the Driskill Hotel, right off 6th Street. Great beer and cocktails in an awesome setting. The bar is hidden away behind a bookshelf in a hostel.

Easy Tiger is a must for beer and imo the only place worth a shite on that stretch of 6th Street.

We went for a bachelor party in March and hit up:

La Barbecue - Get as many types of beef as you can. We waited in line for 2 hours, had about 7 free keg beers and chopped brisket was the only thing left. However, it's the best damn brisket I've ever had. Don't bother with sides, straight meat.

Ranch 616 - Make a reservation as soon as possible. Get the Texas Black Angus Ribeye Topped with House Demi-Glaze and Bleu Cheese Crumbles, served over two Enchiladas of the Day, and comes with Spanish Rice and Borracho Beans on the side. Also, take a few shots of whatever the hell shot it is they serve in jalapeno peppers. Will put a pep in your non-Texan step.

Banger's - Everything we had was legit so order away. However, whatever the really f'n hot relish/peppers they mention on the menu are fiery, avoid them like the plague.

Thanks for the feedback, I will have to start researching. If we are staying at the intercontinental is there an area we can go to and hit up 3 or 4 places just walking or should we can it everywhere?

I know this sounds like an odd question, but we try to walk around towns from place to place. Like in Nola we would start at Stanley's then sobou then carousel then sazerac bar then domenica for early happy hour before heading to the room to get dressed for dinner.

A lot of the place that have been named are within walking distance. I stayed at the IC too. A lot of the cool places to go are in clusters so you're in luck.

Austin isnt the small secret town it use to be

do your research and plan it out according to what part of town you will be in. its a great foodie city so plenty to go around.

at the wrong times it will take you an hour to get from one side to the next

if you get some time take a drive out to the hill country on the outskirts. go to fredericksburg or blanco or dripping springs and have some beer and wine and bbq. i still love the original salt lick in driftwood.

I go to Austin a few times a year. Don't drive. Uber. It's so much easier, and they have someone nearby at all times. As far as places to eat, I dig me some east Austin. Hit up Justine's for something a bit upscale. Dia Due for something just damn tasty. And Sa-Ten for some great coffee and crazy good toast. I recommend the chicken curry toast. Tittays!

That a lot of good looking restaurants. In a bit of a planning freak so once I get my food and drink itinerary researched and written I will try to post it for more comments.

Thanks again FDB.
