I was driving down Vets a little while ago and saw that the new Total Wines was open so I stopped in to take a look. It is a wine lover's dream and also has a great selection of beers and spirits. With all due respect to Martin's and Dorignac's, this is the most impressive wine store we have ever had in the New Orleans area. I can tell I will be spending my share of time and money in there.

I'm sure I will check it out this weekend.

I heard a rumor about them thought that if close to being true annoys me.
As I understand things, the La law says distributors (or their sales reps) aren't allowed to go to the back of stores and bring stock back and put it on shelves, etc. It's fuzzy on if they can do this with displays and such. Everyone has just always played real loose with this and let's it happen.

I heard something about Total Wine trying to strong arm local distributors, etc into providing a lot of hours for free(like a dedicated person) to keep the shelves stocked. If said distributor didn't play along, the folks at Total Wine were getting back at them by reporting them doing any shelf stocking services at all at other stores.

Strange sounding I know. Just what I heard about.

Liquor distributors suck.

Hopefully this place dominates.

The people working in those stores for the distributors are hourly wage and it’s a brutal job. It isn’t their fault if their company is mean. They’re pretty much bottom of the totem pole.

I went 30 minutes after they opened. I thought that they had been opened for a week or so. The sales people didn't know where anything was and they all seemed more interested in talking with each other than helping customers.

Buffalo Trace was in great supply at great prices. No Henrys hard seltzer. Kim Crawford was same price as Sams.

I will go back.

I didn’t know they did a soft open.

I am pretty pumped about going this weekend. End of the month and I still got some of my spending money.

The sheer size has me excited that’s an enormous space for just a Wine/Beer/ Liqour store.

The massive size and incredible inventory is why I’ll be going back.

I know that they want the beer distributers (ex. southern eagle) to restock everyday in their store, whereas those same distributers only go to giant grocery stores that sell huge volumes of beer 1-2 times a week. That's one issue.

So Martins can’t have a distributed take stock from the back and display it but would need a Martin’s employee to do that?

I told them all here this would be the best wine store by miles over anything ever there and a few snickered and laughed at me.

I spend a lot of time in California working at asset facilities we have and go to Total Wines all the time to haul back wines from the Napa and Lodi areas you just cant get here.

Legally wine and liquor distributors in Louisiana cannot stock and fill shelves, only displays. There is also a 30 day float for wine/liquor distributors which means the retailer has 30 days to pay the invoice.

For beer the laws are not set up the same way. They are allowed to merchandise shelves as well as displays. Beer deliveries must be paid upon delivery.

With all that said the wine/liquor laws are extremely favorable to those distributors. So yes, Total Wines reported the local distributors to the ABC and created a huge mess. In Texas the wine/liquor distributors do merchandise. Basically Glazers/Republic have been "illegally" merchandising for years and have told all of their employees to not put a bottle on a shelf at any accounts. Total Wine has in turn pissed off a lot of retailers.

Interesting.

So who does this effect most? I would assume the grocery stores would have people to stock checked already, but Martins has been using distributors to stock shelves this whole time?
