Tomatoes in my Gumbo.

I'm currently working on my drillship in the GoM. I was famished and was looking forward to seafood day for lunch. I was served the normal....fried catfish, fried shrimp, a bowl of gumbo and some fries. Undenounced to me, after sitting down, ready to dive into my gumbo, as I stirred it, pieces of GOTDAMN tomatoes. I got up and trashed it. Messed me up for the rest of the day!!!

I prefer no tomatoes in gumbo, but I will certainly eat gumbo with them unless it doesn't taste good. Did you taste it?

You need to calm down, sir. This is a Wendy's
I prefer no tomatoes as much as the next guy, but I find it's rarely worth throwing the dish away over.
My mom actually used to put a little of the juice from a can of rotel to add a little heat to her gumbo. Actually tasted pretty good.
What really grinded my gears, yesterday, was that I bought a sandwich to-go, but while trying to hurry across a street before the light could change, the sandwich slipped out of the bag. Because it wasn't properly rolled up, the sandwich spilled out all over the concrete and I lost more than half of it. They normally roll that shite up tight like a burrito. I was so depressed, ruined my whole afternoon. That sandwich wasn't cheap, and it was something I had been craving and looking forward to.

Haha people think they will croak if they eat tomatoes in a seafood gumbo or jambalaya.
It's quite a ridiculous stance

The guy is obviously being way overly dramatic. I also don't understand "undenounced".

Tough crowd. I tasted ok. Very thick like a thick stew. Meant unbeknown to me. Food offshore is normally good. But over the years, on these big drill ships they went to having Philippine catering companies. The food is more military or bad cafeteria food. I'm thankful for it. But that doesn't mean I have to eat it. Now their BBQ on the other hand is fantastic.

Yeah, going for that "Academy Award" for drama on the set.
And I'm pretty sure he was shooting for "unbeknownst" to me.

"Undenounced" is almost as bad as the guy who called an afghan blanket an "Afrikaans" the other day.

Some people don’t care for tomatoes.
I don’t care for Tomatoe haters.
I put tomatoes in every big pot that I cook on the stove
Including red beans
Chop them up fine and they cook up
And you never know they are there
Smooths everything else out
And it’s healthy
Y’all should be more concerned about the amount of bell peppers
They can be too strong and overpowering

That's a bit drastic, don't you think?

I love bell peppers. I always use extra, but I don't dislike you if you care for them.

Agreed, it's a little overboard but think the hyperbolic hate comes from the widespread non-LA places defaulting to creole recipes as if they were standard in LA
Any time I've seen gumbo on a menu outside of LA, it always seems to have tomatoes

just taking a guess as to why creole gumbo gets the hate... I just don't really remember rolling my eyes at tomatoes in gumbo on a menu when I lived in LA, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't my initial reaction since moving away.

why is a tomato in your food making you trigger? I got the same thing earlier when announcing I had a creole jambalaya
wat is the big deal?

I've seen it happen. This is a real thing.

Look people. I put maters in my other gravy's a liquid foods that I cook down. It doesn't go in a gumbo to serve to the public. Do that at your house. Oh and I like sweet potatoes with my gumbo.....not freaking potato salad.
