The Swamp Room is Back

The burgers are thick, the lights are low, the cartoon alligator is grinning over a mug of beer. The Swamp Room in Metairie is back.
Part sports bar, part tavern, always a late-night hang, the Swamp Room was one of the great, enduring dives of Metairie going back more than 40 years. It closed last spring after losing its lease but plans were quickly hatched to open a new Swamp Room just up the street.

Nothing like some non melted shredded cheese on a burger. The hell

Seriously. They just dumped bagged cheese onto that thing?
Reminds me of the "new" Lakeview Harbor. I had a handfull of ice cold, bagged shredded cheddar on my medium rare burger. Not good.

Friend,
I have an interesting personal story about the Swamp Room. Perhaps when I have the time and inclination, I will share it with you. Until that time, I leave with with the ten best burgers of the NOLA Metro:
10. New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Co.
9. District Donuts
8. Buffa's
7. Bud's Broiler
6. Ground Pati
5. Lakeview Harbor
4. Beach Corner
3. Snug Harbor
2. Houston's
1. Whole Foods
Smoked, without cheese, without any toppings, without any sauces. Hamburgers par excellence should come this way. Just as the best French fries are those that require no sauces or catsup, so too do the best burgers require only a bun. Additions to masterpieces are subtractions. Of course, there are few burger masterpieces available out there, even with the bourgeois burger boom of 2008-2015. These demimondes' flaws the cook attempts to hide with catsup, cheese, other meats, eggs, and salads. Whole Foods' burger is sans pareil and is best served only with a bun.
Faithfully,
TulaneLSU

Maybe I am alone with this opinion but for a thick burger like that I like to grate some sharp cheddar(not bagged), let it sit out while I cook my burgers so the cheese isn't cold and put that on my burgers. I think sharp cheddar taste much better when it's not melted. I think most cheeses taste better when not melted.

The "old" Lakeview Harbor did same
As do Beach Corner, Port O' Call, and others....
I just assumed it was a New Orleans thing. I like that it's different than the other thin patty melted cheeseburgers.

I dont have a problem with shredded cheese, but do it yourself...this is just bagged shredded....which adds potato starch to it and tastes nothing like freshly shredded.

Agree. Exponentially better.

Anyone who refers to ketchup as "catsup" is an a-hole and cannot be trusted.

We are talking about bars... The places that serve like this are old school bars that just happen to make a good burger.
These aren't the bars of new that happen to serve elevated food with craft cocktails and beers.
You can still smoke inside of Oscar's while you eat your bagged shredded cheddar cheeseburger

My favorite kind of place...I just honestly dont think Ive ever been to a place that does this on a burger. If its some institution then whatever, just not what I would prefer.

It's some kind of N.O. thing that started sometime back wehen. I haven't seen burgers like those outside of N.O. bars. They are also customarily served with a side baked potato which I've never had outside of N.O. w/ a burger.

Thankfully it'll be non-smoking now.

NOLA style cheeseburger is cold cheddar on a burger. Im not a fan either. I want my cheese melted .

The smoked burger from whole foods is a myth. Lol

It does not bother me how the cheese is placed on my burger.
Not sure what the big deal is. Simply order the burger with cheese “melted” the cook will add your cheese and flip a bowl over it until cheese is melted! Done! No issues.

Will they though?
I prefer American or cheddar slices melted on a burger. Cold cheddar is for sure a NOLA thing. Thinking about it Buds and even Ben's does it this way too, but their cheese seems to melt some.
Port of call you'll have a bite of hot and cold together with all that lettuce and cheese.
