I had a similar thought when I read the Sunday NYT this week. It was on Page 1 below the fold, but still. A big whiskey company, which has been losing some ground as bourbon has risen in prominence, drops a "bombshell" revelation. The NYT, which has an affinity for stories with a particular viewpoint, runs it.
At one point in the story someone points out, "Jack Daniels soared in the 80s because it tied its branding to yuppies, now it is trying to do the same with millenials."
Most telling part of the whole story? Whether or not to reveal the slave origin story of Jack Daniels is left up to the discretion of the guide.
Marketing fluff.

Why does it matter if it's true or not? Who gives a sh!t?
A "marketing ploy?" ... yeah, I see all kinds of black people, liberals and hipsters running to buy Jack now ... not.
The fact that some of you are getting wound up about this is very telling.

I love reading it as a ritual. But jesus every week there is a long entry about something maybe, perhaps shady Trump did at some point and an overly twee Sam Sifton recipe.

I don't need to work in marketing to understand the consumer habits of certain demographics. This story, even if it's true, actually doesn't make hipsetrs, Democrats, liberals, or blacks want to drink Jack.
The hipsters drink kombucha. If they're drinking liquor, it has to be some oddball sh!t that nobody heard of. Jack is too mainstream for hipsters.
African Americans aren't going to start drinking the sh!t because of them "finally admitting" a slave contributed to it's creation. If anything they'll try to BOYCOTT the stuff as payback for 150 years of "cultural appropriation." If you want to market it to African Americans you need a Hip-Hop artist to rap about it.
To be honest, most black people will NEVER drink the stuff. Just something about the name LYNCHburg turns them off (even though the name has nothing to do with people being lynched).
Average white non-hipster Democrats and liberals MIGHT drink Jack based on marketing, but only if they know that it would really piss off some Republicans.

Seems like you and a few other guys are a little upset that someone had the audacity to associate Jack Daniel's with a slave. Then you immediately jump to discredit it as a "marketing ploy." LMAO
Personally, I find it funny as hell. I don't even drink Jack. I got no horse in the race ... I could not possibly care less who was involved in it's creation. I just find it down right hilarious that some of you are acting like it's part of an overwhelming racial conspiracy ... for the record, I think the story is bullsh!t.

The question is stupid and is based on erroneous assumptions.
The very fact that this story put out by Jack has someone named unclebuck, who claims to "have no dog in the fight" and who couldn't "care less" about Jack, thinking about Jack to the extent that it is causing him to make multiple posts about Jack in this thread speaks to the efficacy of the marketing initiative.
