The Pit Room (Houston) - BBQ Redemption

I first ate there about a year ago after returning to town from the Far East. Just wanted to purge my innards with some TX BBQ. It had the reviews so I took home over $40 worth of brisket, ribs, and sausage - just for me.
All-in-all, it was a terrible. Brisket was salvageable. Ribs needed a winch and come-along to get the meat off the bone and way over-rubbed with pepper (and I like some pepper). Sausage had very little flavor and was bone dry.
It was still getting some good reviews. So a year later and since I happened to be in the neighborhood (Greenway Plaza) I gave it another go. Didn't have a lot of time so I only got some brisket and a pork rib (the beef ribs also looked delicious). And it was incredible. I would consider myself a 'BBQ connoisseur lite' and it was among the best I've had. Look forward to going back.

My two times there yielded a similar experience. One time was just poor, the other elite, some of the best I've ever had.

Don’t sleep on the chicken taco.

When were you there?

Offshore, where's a good Sunday sit down BBQ for out of towners and old folks.

The Pit Room, Pinkerton’s, Killen’s, Brisket House

Only tried Pit Room once. It was good but not great IMO. I need to give it another shot.
Minor houston bbq hijack.
I finally made the trip up to Spring to try Corkscrew BBQ. Best brisket I've ever had. The ribs were good, but i'll skip them and just get brisket next time though.
Tried:
Pinkerton's
Pit Room
Roegel's
Jackson Street
Ellis Bros BBQ popup
Gatlin's
Ray's BBQ
Brookstreet
Corkscrew
Still need to try:
Killen's
Tejas Chocolate Craftory
Gatlin's is the only place I found smoked wings, and while they were good, they only offered their BBQ sauce and a not an awesome wing sauce like Blue Oak's inferno or rooster.

Just got back from Killens. Had the wagyu burnt ends, brisket, pork and beef ribs and sausage. Very moist brisket, beef rib and burnt ends was outstanding. We had the creamed corn and charro beans sides. I've had take out from here before but wanted a sit down place today. We waited about 45 min but well worth it.

The old folks decided not to go so we skipped this. Good to know for the future though.

Nice report. I need to get over to Killen's one of these days.
That Spring Creek place is good? I work in Energy Corridor so I could make it to that one towards Katy for lunch one day.

I was replying to Envy's question about a sit down bbq place on Sunday with old folks. Spring Creek is a chain based out of Dallas but it's always going to be a solid meal. Don't go in expecting Killens or Pit Room but you'll always get a solid meal every time.

I must have visited on a below average day. Corkscrew, Jackson St, and Pit Room are far better.

I’ve only eaten at The Pit Room once while in Houston on business. Seems like a poster on here said it was good so I went there for lunch. I had the moist and lean brisket, one of those Fred Flintstone beef ribs, and some jalapeño sausage. I thought it was excellent. All of it was good.
I also went to Killens a few months earlier and thought it was also excellent.
If I had to pick one I would say it’s a toss up. My beef rib at Killens might have been a little better but I think the only reason why is because I got lucky and got an extra good rib. That thing was huge. I felt like I was eating a bone-in ribeye with that brisket bark on it. I’m sure my cardiologist would disapprove but I absolutely love those giant beef ribs.
Man Texas knows how to smoke some beef BBQ and don’t get me started on the Mexican food in that state.

Almost went Monday, but wasn't sure on the beer selection so I hit the Conservatory instead

Beer selection isn't too shabby but no where near the selection at Conservatory. You did miss half-price bourbon day which I think is probably one of the best deals in town - it does suck that it's on a Monday, though.

here now at the pit room, can say that the beef rib is outstanding.
brisket has fallen flat though, very chewy and on the cusp of being dried out.
pork ribs are tasty, jalapeno cheddar sausagr is nice as well
mac n cheese is very good
