The Demonization of Gluten (Podcast)

Thought-provoking (and well done) podcast on the concept of a Gluten-free diet. The central theme is removing gluten from the diet as a treatment for Celiac disease. It implies at one point that to some extent, we've all been duped and questions the wisdom of going gluten-free even though you're not diagnosed with Celiac disease. Even the utmost authority on the subject says he would "... never, ever" prescribe a Gluten-free diet as a part of a general wellness regimen. Draw your own conclusions. BTW, all of the Freakonomics podcasts are very well done. As always, taken with a pinch of salt. Podcast

I just read about a small study on people who did not have a Celiac but claimed gluten sensitivity.
They gave them energy bars with 1) gluten, 2) a sugar that some scientists think causes intestinal issues, and 3) neither of those,
Those tested ate the bars and journaled their digestion issues. They had more recorded problems with the placebo than the gluten bar.

Wait, which one was the placebo in that study?

No. 3 was the placebo. No gluten or sugar.

There are documentaries for all foods these days. Gluten free is probably promoted by the meat people. The wheat people demonize meat. There are so many nutrition discrepancies and variences, no one know what’s up.

The pretentiousness level of gluten free people is the biggest appeal.

Gluten intolerance is just plain old diarrhea. It's part of life, folks.

Just once I want someone, who doesn't have Celiac's, to say " I just want to try the gluten free thing to see what it does" and not be smug about it. These people get as bad as Cross Fit people.

There is plenty on on pubmed on "non-celiac gluten sensitivity."
More and more data show it's genuine. Still doesn't excuse the assholeishness that comes packaged with it.

But what is it exactly? How are they quantifying the sensitivity?
Are these people exercising after eating their gluten-filled foods?
I get some awful heartburn if I eat a big sandwich and sit at a computer all day. Was it the bread? The calories? The inactivity?
Must be those gluten-filled biscuits I had with breakfast. Not the four pieces of salt and sugar cured bacon.
Or maybe it's the cake I ate. That gluten flour did me in. Not the three layers of frosting. Oops! This other piece got messed up when I was cutting my piece. I'll scrape up the bits. Still only counts as one piece for me!
Or the soda? Maybe it's the 40 grams of sugar people are sucking through straws in cardboard cups every day at lunch...
...a few hours after those 40 grams of sugar in their creamy mocha frosted marshmallow coffee.
Maybe the TV dinners? Lord knows I don't have time anymore to toss a 6 oz serving of chicken in the oven with some chopped broccoli and a sweet potato. Need to heat up that Stouffer's lasagna. Serving size said 1/10 of the lasagna was 300 calories, but I was hungry after a long day of taking calls and filling out forms. I ate 1/4 of the pan. How many calories is that? I don't know...who really does fractions anymore? Wait...how many calories were in those bread sticks? Gotta have garlic bread with Italian food, right?
No biggie though. I'll just walk off the extra calories in the morning. Is the Pillsbury chocolate chip cookie dough still in the fridge? I'd like a few cookies from the oven and a glass of milk. Will eating a few bites of raw cookie dough while the cookies bake make me sick? The eggs are pasteurized, right?
Damn all this gluten is making me feel terrible. Must be sensitive to it.

I’m not gluten free but I know several people who are. They say they feel better every day (and you can tell, they act much different than they used to). I’m not gonna tell them that something that makes them feel better is a lie, but for the most part I think they’re just being more health conscious and eating and exercising better, so they feel better

Yeah, of course if you're eating only items that have gluten and don't eat and veggies you'll have shitting issues.
Most people who go gluten free end up eating less burgers, pizzas, etc things that are high fat and cause you to piss out your arse.

I hate when people tell me they just feel so much better after going gluten free..
Its like I cut out Pizza and beer and mcdonalds and now I just have so much more energy.
NO shite!!

It's not the high fat that's causing you to piss out your arse though.
Most of the people who are "feeling better" by going gluten free are feeling better because they're not eating heavily processed shite for food or a gazillion grams of sugar a day, coincidentally which is why the US turned in to the land of the lardasses.
Gluten isn't the issue. Fat isn't the issue. Carbs from fruits and veggies isn't the issue. It's sugar (along with eating WAY more calories than you need each day.)

You missed the "gluten and carbs aren't the issue" part.
