The venerable Columns Hotel on St. Charles Avenue, built originally as an Italianate-style mansion for a wealthy tobacco merchant in 1883-84, has been sold by Jacques and Claire Creppel, who had turned it into a New Orleans institution over the last 40 years.

The new owner is Jayson Seidman, a hotelier who has developed about a half-dozen quirky "boutique" hotels around the country, including two in New Orleans: The Drifter on Tulane Avenue, which this year made Architectural Digest magazine's "chic motel" list, and The Frenchmen, on the border of Marigny and the French Quarter.

Can't wait!

Blegh. My friend loves The Drifter.

I'm pretty open minded and end up at some weird places listening to weird music sometimes.. But the clientele at The Drifter is less hip to me and more trailer park trashy.

You think those fools shower before dipping their legs in the pool?

Looks like old baw doesn't even own swim trunks. He likely worked an all nighter at the Saint and just ripped his shorts off.

Once had drinks not too long after Katrina with Justin Vincent at the Columns. Sean Penn was at the table behind us. Sean Penn knew who JV was bc he was recently on the cover of SI. We acted like we didn't know who Sean Penn was.

Have a fear of that dyke overpowering you? Maybe it's the fellas with the colored hair that you fancy?

Your blue hair doesn't bother me baw. You just look trashy.

I don't think they are going to do anything too wild. The neighborhood would revolt. And the Columns fits.

What I do think they may do is up the food game a bit and try to make it more of a destination.

It turning into something like Cure would be a decent change. Delachaise does something similar and they seem to stay packed.

I hope they at least dust the ceiling fan blades (but maybe the two inches of dust on the leading edge is somehow on the national register and protected) and replace the old Spanish moss filled mattresses in the rooms.

If they update the rooms to modern fixtures and keep the downstairs mostly the same, I think it's a big win.

This. The bathrooms are awful upstairs.

The ghosts are chill though.

So, is the pool going to be "swimsuit optional" like at The Drifter? I assume the guy who bought it is gay. Gay dudes love transforming these old house hotels in nude party palaces. Don't get creative, Jayson. Just clean the place up a bit.

I’ve got a ton of stories with semi-famous folks at the Columns bar

I helped a local news anchor crawl to his house on the block behind the hotel after getting plastered watching danica Patrick place in her first nascar race
