Food & Wine

quote:

why is this not the most famous place for coffee and donuts in New Orleans, except that if you are here, you already know the answer to that. Coffee Call isn’t located in New Orleans at all; you will find it an hour away, traffic permitting, in Louisiana’s capital city, Baton Rouge

quote:

This goes a long way toward explaining why so many people choose to overlook the outrageously erratic quality standards that Cafe du Monde seems to have settled for, rather easily, too easily, over time.

quote:

Not that you need to justify your drive—until Morning Call returns, you’ll find me at Coffee Call any time I’m in New Orleans and the craving strikes. For some things, you don’t ask how long the drive is going to be—you just get in the car and you go.

I can honestly say I just never really thought to go to coffee call when I lived in BR. In the 30 years i lived in BR, I may have gone 3-4 times

You’ll have a difficult time finding something more overrated than beignets.

It is difficult to find an actual beignet imo. I always seem to find the filled ones when they are supposed to be pillow-like

I agree with this

The original coffee call on college was GOAT

Getting beignets in Nola now is not even an option. To much of a PITA to park to get to Cafe Du Monde or cafe beignet

So drive from nola to br just to get fried dough and sugar? This guy is retarded.

quote:

Personally, particularly when showing first-time visitors around, I don’t find waiting around patiently to be an option—I’m happy to make the quick trip up to Baton Rouge, where the experience at Coffee Call is typically as good, often better than previous experiences at Morning Call.

“I don’t like lines. But I don’t mind wasting 3 hours to get some $3 pastry.”

That’s serial killer kind of crazy.

Coffee Call does have some damn fine beignets. A bag of fingers with a cafe au lait is hard to beat

No such beignet exists that justifies driving from NOLA to BR.

Or from BR to NOLA.

If you're already in BR though, Coffee Call is great.

I don’t like coffee call’s beignets that much. The Coffee Shop at Cajun Village in Sorrento is better. Plus, they have crawfish etouffee stuffed beignets.

The same can be said about Café du Monde. Nobody goes to New Orleans for beignets. But if there's not a line, or you know when to go without waiting, a hot puffy beignet and coffee is a treat.

If you’re in St. George, check out Rue Beignet across from Ruffino’s. It’s just as good as Coffee Call without the line.

Wht I love about Cajun village is you can take family and out of town company there for the whole experience. Very good coffee and beignets fried fresh and the perfect size for dunking in a very good cup of coffee. Then go for a nice breakfast. They do good breakfast food or lunch etc as well. After that ya can go peruse the shops and such. Just watch for poison ivy it grows on the fence around the GAtor area

I've always thought this. Cafe du Monde has Coffee Call beat on atmosphere, but comparing beignets, Coffee Call wins.

Coffee call is great for the fingers; for pillows it's hard to beat Cafe Du Monde. The other great thing about Coffee Call is the hours. Many a late night finished with a cafe au lait and a plate of fingers.

I have some fond memories of the old location. Miss the K&B next to it too
