very large portion of each show is now dedicated to in-studio guests instead of callers. The guests have all been good, but I suspect it is because not many people have HD radio and there are not many callers.
Spot on. Have you recognized any of his callers lately? It seems like no one calls anymore.

Anyone else noticed how his memory is failing more often? Can't remember restaurant or chef names.

One of my favorites (Red Gravy) is on the show today (Monday) at 4. Rose is a hoot.

Yeah I've noticed that the past year or so. He doesn't remember names.

Tom must not care much for keeping up with the bbq scene around Nola. Someone called last month looking for a good suggestion as the only place the caller knew of was the Joint. Instead of throwing out some options such as maybe Blue Oak or the great place at the time that chef Rob worked at, Tom just told the guy to get over to McClure's as because it's the best in the city.
I like to pick on Tom, but in general he has done a good job and has good info. I got to know the Nola restaurant seen many years ago partly due to him by listening to his show and reading his newsletters.
And even now where he is at an age where he doesn't like to accept modern or trendy restaurants, etc, he's still way better to listen to than that annoying new chick that has a show on 990AM or anyone else locally I've heard in recent years.

Nice assessment. I agree with everything you said. He does need to sharpen up on newer iterations of dining, but overall he does a great job and I commend him for that. I would like to hear more of his older regular callers and less of interviews with people.

He's better than Poppy Tooker on 89.9, but he is also a relic. I used to enjoy the fake callers asking about his wife's stuffed artichoke. I still listen occasionally by plugging in my phone and listening from the WWL website.

Not sure who the chick is on 990AM, but I now am not sure I can take her seriously.
She pimps El Paso in Metairie, which I think it horrible. I know she needs sponsors and all of that, but she did a remote broadcast from there last week and I couldn't help but laugh.
They served her a plate of re-fried beans and rice and she was going on and on about how it was house made and was so good. That crap is the same tv dinner quality you get at 90% of the other grease and cheese tex mex dumpy places in this state.
Then they brought out the fajita meat to her and I thought she was going to have an orgasm on the air. "Oh my, this is cooked to perfection. It's like perfect. This smell, oh my goodness, etc". And to make it worse every time she said a word that was Mexican, she over pronounced it in this strange high pitched voice.

Does she come on after Eric Asher?

You really took the time to write all that? Jeez, you must be bored as hell...

He's a devoted listener. what's wrong with that?

quote:I'm not so devoted anymore. I've heard his show for about 3 minutes since the HD changeover. But otherwise, I have been listening to the show for a very long time. I don't go to "Fine Dining" restaurants more than maybe 2 times a year, but it is good to hear callers talk about what they like. I'm also more of a cook at home kind of guy, so I always like the talk about recipes and techniques. Listening to guests was hit and miss - some I really enjoyed, but others I couldn't care less about.

I'm not happy to hear he's changed the format to more guests and fewer callers. Not as interesting to me. I still think he's doomed unless he can get back on regular radio.

I agree wholeheartedly. I used to listen daily, but since the switch to HD, not nearly as much. He doesn't do the word of the day, restaurant of the day and other things like he used to. It's really weird what happened to this show. No one calls him anymore that used to be considered his regular listeners.

Nigel the bartender had a new chef everyday... the worked out of an old railcar turned restaurant.

I haven't listened once since the switch
Before that i probably listened a few days a week for almost 10 years

I feel many of his regular listeners have stopped listening since HD switch
