The 2017 Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest beer is out and it's good.

I had this one and the Sam Adams Octoberfest side by side and the Sierra Nevada was the clear winner IMO.

Sierra Nevada/Faust Miltenberger Oktoberfest (Chico, CA)
You wouldn’t expect a 37-year-old brewery to continually produce the country’s most exciting Oktoberfest. Nevertheless, each year Chico beer pioneer Sierra Nevada does, perhaps because they always pick a different German brewery to collaborate with. 2017’s partner is Brauhaus Faust-Miltenberger, a 350-year-old Bavarian brauhaus. With so much knowledge and prestige, the result is a deeply caramel offering that is still beautifully balanced by German-grown whole cone hops.

It's really good.
If there's a better craft brewer that is now way too big to really be called a craft brewer than Sierra Nevada, I don't know what it is.

Yes it is. I tried to start an Oktoberfest review thread of this year's crop and didn't get any response.
St. Arnold is my favorite so far. Urban South 2nd and Sierra Nevada 3rd.
I really want some Lakefront brewery and Brooklyn brewery before the season is over.

Best of the American brewed Oktoberfests this year. I like that they actually went with a Festbier instead of a Marzen. And that it can be bought in cans.

Of course it is. It's a marzen. What did you expect?
I thought the Saint Arnold version had more depth of flavor than the typical Marzen. But then again, your typical Marzen isn't 6.6% ABV either. I'm not mad at it. It is a good cool weather beer.

But are they all a malty mess?

yes.
I just finished my annual 6-pack of it, and it was much better than I remember

I am just about to polish off a sixer of St. Arnold's. It's good, but I am having a hard time readjusting my palate after a summer of Ghost, G&G, Opus etc...But I will just have to do the work and keep trying. Was happy to see Urban South Octoberfest in stores, so that saved me a trip to the brewery. I am keeping an eye out for Sierra Nevada but have not run into it yet.

I'm finding that these type beers are really good for resetting the palate, then you can really enjoy Ghost, etc. that much more. I kind of get desensitized to hops when I drink nothing but IPAs and it affects my perception of other beers. Switching it up kinda helps.

I agree with this. If I switch it up some, I can go back to an IPA I didn't think had much going for it and it will be much better.

If you are an IPA guy then yes. Personally, Marzen beer is what all beer should taste like.

It's a damn solid beer.
Sam Adams Oktoberfest is garbage, IMO.
