I would reluctantly agree just because I love the pizza and wop salad but think the rest of the menu is subpar. But, I've eaten there since as long as I can remember, and so have my parents, so I can't really disagree.

Would I be out of line to suggest Irene's for an essential Italian (in New Orleans) restaurant?

Not to me - hell, it'll work just swell for either Italian or Creole Italian As Determined By A Gigantic Pain In The arse.

I've had a little time to reflect on the top ten, and I must admit I am not as adamant about Impastato's being on there. In its place, I have been considering Rocky and Carlo's. Creole Italian, check. Seafood, check. Chalmette classic, check. Neighborhood restaurant, check. A previous poster mentioned Brocato's. I love Brocato's as much as anyone. The reason I didn't include it is because Brocato's doesn't serve meals. Fear not: when the 10 most essential New Orleans dessert emporiums is released, Brocato's will claim the top spot!

That's just the dumb alter ego, though.
