I'd put money that every single person in this thread (myself included), wouldn't pick out their proclaimed "favorite" in a blind taste test.

I absolutely love this one and my friends give me crap about it all the time.

The Tastee's Donut kingcake is legit. The Tastee's McKenzie's recipe hunk of stale bread with sugar on top is gross IMO.

2) Manny Randazzo's - I only put this here because if I didn't people would accuse me of trolling. IMO, it's only slightly better than Rouses, but costs twice as much and often is sold out. It's little more than a cinnamon bun with sprinkles on top. I'll eat the random slice at a Mardi Gras party, but I don't get excited over one. Not in the least. In reality, NOLA Cake Cafe and Bakery should be here, but unless you read this, you'll assume I really think M Randazzo's is #2. It isn't.

Best there is

Manny Randazzo's

What exactly is so good about it? It's cake icing and multicolored ice cream sprinkles. It's not even true purple green and gold. I have had that king cake numerous times and I see nothing that puts it head and shoulders above any others.

I know it's a Nola tradition but just not my kind of king cake. Plus the sugar doesn't stick to the bread.

Donut style King Cake Meche's in the Acadiana area is my favorite

This should not be called a king cake, IMO.

Meche's is nothing more than an over iced donut...Sucks to say the least. Best in Laffy area is Kellers..

Three MFing pages and no one even mentions Maurice's? This board has fallen captive to the TulaneLSU top 10 lists.

Some of them are similar, but if you can't taste (blindly) the difference between a Sucre, a McKenzie's, and a Haydel's king cake then you need to go see a doctor.

BTW that little shack on Vets like right before Bonnabel (may be a bank now?) that you could drive up to was awesome when I was 6.

Almond paste filled FTW (plus the figurines, of course).

My F&D discovery last year: Dong Phuong is better than many (if not all)listed.

Yes, the texture of these are awesome. I'm planning on picking one of these up on my way home from work tomorrow for the game Saturday.

There is a Gambino's and Ambrosia does them well but I prefer Ambrosia's over Gambinos.

Had a slice from Ambrosia last night and it was dry as all hell. I'm a purist and really just like the cinnamon ones, so it is difficult to find ones that aren't super dry.

Coffee & ,Westbank Expressway, Marrero, LA (Grade B)
Cream Cheese ($17)
Large size, very fresh and light but lacking in moisture and much flavor other than the sugar and cream cheese. Also, I'm not sure if this was true for the whole king cake but there was no cream cheese INSIDE the cake but rather dollups around it on the top. I was not impressed but I enjoyed my slice.

Haydels Bakery, Jefferson Highway (Grade B)
Lacking in complexity and lack of flavor in the cake.

Sucre, Uptown NOLA (Grade B+)
Bread could have been more moist

Manny Randazzos, Metairie (Grade A)
Moist and full of cinnamon. Have had better icing.

Maurice's, Metairie (Grade C-)
DRY DRY DRY

La Boulangerie, Magazine St., Uptown (Grade A)
New winner on best king cake tasted! They sold the French and the traditional NOLA style. I am only tasting NOLA style and this one was top notch. It was $13 for a small Sucre sized king cake (pretty small). Instead of a baby it had a porcelain musical instrument (the one Steve Urkel always played on Family Matters). It looked like I wasn't going to enjoy it because it had limited icing and sugar on the outside but when you cut into it you see a thin layer of cinnamony sugary goodness running throughout. It was very moist with good cinnamon flavor!

Rouses, Tchopitoulas (Grade B)
Good cinnamon flavor in the cake but slightly dry and a very heavy cake. They put extra icing to cover up the slightly dry cake.

Angelo's Baker (Grade B)
Good cinnamon flavor but a little dry. Nothing spectacular.

Rankings:

La Boulangerie
Randazzos
Sucre
Coffee &
Haydels
Angelo's
Rouses
Hubig's
Maurice's
