Good reviews, but I have major issues with Sucre and Randazzo's. Sucre is the worst king cake on the planet, bar none! And the most expensive! Randazzo's is okay, but they put way too much icing on it, so much that it leaves a burning sensation in my stomach after even a few small bites. I had some Randazzo's yesterday, and I still feel it in my stomach today.

Wanted to say I had a Tastees donut king cake over the weekend, and it was confirmed that by taste alone, no other king cake even approaches the greatness that is Tastees.

Yeah, I'm sure the Walmart one is better.

Thanks for once again proving yourself to be a non-authority on yet another culinary issue.

I'll take a Walmart, even a Whole Foods one, before I'd take a Sucre king cake. However, I heard they changed the recipe this year (probably due to my long winded letter I wrote them two years ago about how their version of the king cake was disgracing many tourist and Tulane students' view of the king cake), so it's no longer nearly as dry. Now, according to the T.P., it's overly buttery. I may give one a sample test, if I can muster the courage to enter Sucre again.

Because, after all, who, besides tourists, newly arrived out of towners, and Tulane students eat at Sucre?

Wink, I think you're my biggest fan.

I tend to see more 16 year old girls there than anything.

I don't have any problem with Sucre. I like their little desserts and chocolates. Tariq seems like a pretty big douche but whatever.

I cannot fathom why people are willing to get to the store at 7 am and wait in a line around the block for a Randazzo's king cake. It simply boggles my mind. I can see thinking "Randazzo's is my favorite king cake;" I cannot see thinking it is so markedly superior to any other king cake to be worth that much grief.

For being such an insecure individual, you are amazingly self-aware. Quite odd.

It's like you know me. I'm strangely attracted and scared at the same time.

If Randazzo's went a little easier with the icing they would be number one imo.

Which plain king cake is the least dry out there? My king cake intake this time of year has gotten less and less over the last couple years. Even when someone swears by a certain bakery, I come away dissapointed.

I like Haydel's the best, but the Times Picayune has a contest going on right now. They have narrowed the best in the city down to six and are doing tastings at each and crowning a winner in February. I think the 6 finalists are Nona Randazzo, Manny Randazzo, Randazzo Cameila City, Haydel's, Sucre, and Gambinos

Have any of you tried SweetCakes & Candy Emporium? Located at 2821 S Robertson in Central City, Groupon just started offering 50% coupons for their cakes.

Just finished a delicious king cake from Dorignac's. It's much better than Rouses. One thing I've decided this year is that I don't like a strong cinnamony king cake. Rouses and Randazzos are off my list. I hate that feeling left in my stomach. They're essentially cinnamon rolls in a cake shape. Long live non-cinnamon king cakes.

Top ten list has been edited to note this change.

I hate the McKenzie's style stale hunk of bread with colored sugar on top king cakes. Cinnamon king cake for me then.

I do agree with you that the Tastee Donut king cake is very good.
