Original Ninfa’s Uptown. I dig the vibe and the hot River Oaks women

Go to Armando’s on a Thursday night if that’s the vibe you’re looking for. If you know, you know.

Glad OP had a good lunch - El T or Ninfa's is the auto choice for sending people out of town solo. Locals (should) know better for their dining experience and bringing their people to dine. Every Houston family has the go-to neighborhood place they find the comfort food at a better price than the long term players, but if you are in town, the little extra for the El Tiempo experience is well worth it IMHO.

eta: and we're ordering different things at el tiempo if you're running up decent steakhouse bills on food alone. beef fajitas for 2 is $30 each.

Sure if you are splitting a 1/4 lb. maybe I am a fat arse but I can knock that out myself easy

1/4 lb | Small | Chico $31.391/2 lb | Medium | Mediano $60.491 lb | Large | Grande $79.59

No Way is El Tiempo a restaurant I would send someone to. The fajita schtick is lame and their food isn't nearly as good as their hype.
The one by my house is Dog arse Terrible. But I guess getting a stunning 3.8 rating on Google is hot damned delicious! I mean, hundreds of people can't compare to your opinion...

Original Ninfa's is a 4.2 rating
Escalante's is a 4.2 rating
Pappasitos is a 4.5 and i think everyone I know enjoys this place.

The Gloria's by my house is a 4.7 rating.

Those are easily looked up on Google Maps.

Look dude, you don’t need to justify your poor taste in food to me.

You’re the only mother fricker in this thread suggesting a chain from Dallas with bland food.

Hey.
That’s crossing the line and you know it. There is no need for those type of insults on the Food board.

LA Escondida in Missouri city shits on these chains. Same waiters for last 15 years and bartenders. Food is awesome especially if you go authentic mexican menu. Margs are top tier and pricing is lowered than chains. Service is off the charts excellent.

Ok screw it. Larry’s in Richmond. Been going there for 40 years of my life. Yes, the paintings on the wall have what appear to be cockroach bites in them, it’s the same waiters from when I was a kid except the ones that have died, and there’s always some stray cats around the parking lot.

But damn if their enchiladas and special combination nachos don’t hit the spot for me. (My wife hates this place, but I don’t care)!

My wife keeps wanting to try that place just for the name and for how old it is. Guess we need to finally do it.

I like El Tiempo alot, but the location on Richmond is the one I've always enjoyed the food at. Have been several times to the one in Stafford on the pond, and other than the margs, was pretty disappointing every single time. I don't know why.

My current TexMex favorites in the Houston area:

Cadente in on Richmond in Houston
Pablo's off Grand Parkway in Richmond

Pablo's has absolutely delicious lamb chops. Might be the only ones I'd attempt to put up against the ones from Poseidon's in Lafayette.

Do it. If the hot sauce is hot on the first scoop, you’ll know it’s a good day.

Cheese enchiladas, special combination nachos, the queso, or my son’s abomination that he requests: chicken fried chicken breast with chili gravy and queso on top.

Funny to me cause there's such a big difference between "on Richmond" and "in Richmond" Learned that the hard way a few years ago.

The El Tiempo on westheimer and Taft was my go-to location. Usually would go at lunch for better deals on lunch menu.

Aside from fajitas, is there any particular go-to dish at Ninfa's or El Tiempo? Decent chance I'll be in the area Sunday evening through Monday mid-day and I may check one of them out.

Houston is huge, so it depends on what side of town. Solid recommendations in here. I'll add one for the north side of town...

I seem to order the El Charro most of the time when I'm at El Tiempo
