Good God, is it a meal or a damn religious rite?

No meal should come with so many "rules."

And the giant rolls piss me off. I nearly choked to death in a supposedly great sushi joint when a long piece of wrapper snaked down my throat. I had to reach into my mouth and pull the fricker out

That's fine (and I do like sushi), but there's a line between quality sushi and a lot of the overpriced crap thrown out there by places like Sake where it's snow crab drenched in various sauces. The things you named are not indicative of most places in town.

Yup. Personally, for my broke arse, the $10 Kaminari lunch buffet is just right. I tend to avoid the mayonnaise rolls simply because I'm not a huge mayo fan.

who in the hell puts the pickled ginger on the piece of sushi?

I know people who soak the ginger in soy sauce and then put it on the sushi. I'm over here like:

Sushi is only expensive if you order speciality rolls or sashimi. I usually get a few "typical" rolls and it's about $20.

What is the proper way to eat Nyotaimori? Are there do's and don'ts pictures for this?

True, but sashimi/nigiri is the whole reason I even get sushi.

When I was in HS, I was more into the regular rolls and you're right--it was much cheaper. I remember going with my date to Kamados (now Ginza) and spending $25 total on two soft drinks, 3 of the $5 rolls, and an order of egg rolls ($2).

I've gotten it from Publix and I don't think it is bad. It's probably a huge faux pas but whatever. I'm no sushi connoisseur.

I'm known to throw some of that ginger on my roll slices when I eat them. I like the variety of flavors - mixing it up a bit. What can I say, I'm a Louisiana boy, not a Japanese fisherman.

If a sushi chef accidentally put some sliced onion and garlic on my plate, I'm sure I'd try a few of the rolls with those "toppings" as well.

Bacon wrapped around a pizza is so disrespectful to the Italian culture that started eating pizza out of necessity because their ovens were too short for turkeys.

I buy the non-raw stuff from Kroger all the time. May do so today.

Sushi is ridiculously overpriced ..

Not really. I looked into making sushi myself, and sushi grade fish is very expensive. By the time you buy the fish and all the other stuff, not to mention you have to know how to cook the rice correctly, you are about even with a sushi restaurant.

So yes, sushi is overpriced
No, sushi restaurants are equitable to doing it yourself.

The kind of place a moronic troupe of bachelorette partygoers would drop several hundred dollars while dressed like they're going to a red carpet event,

The trend now is to eat at a sushi restaurant dressed like a hobo wearing sorority shirts or t-shirts 4 times too big for you and looking like you literally woke, and went straight to the sushi restaurant. I call them the sorority hobos. The only thing they are missing is a stick with a red handkerchief tied to the end. I don't know when this look became desirable, but if a girl was looked like that when i went to college, i'd veer away in fear of catching ringworm.

Sorry, but I'm not paying for a roll and leaving it on the plate just because it's polite in Japan. I'm eating every little bite.

Just because sushi originated in the East, doesn't mean i'm copying their culture here. Call me classless, but if i pay for sushi, i'm eating the damn thing.
