After speaking to some friends of mine (Japanese, Chinese, Korean), they say all that stuff is bullshite here. None of the sushi chefs are expecting Americans to follow these 'rules'. Its not even really followed over there.

Never understood this look either. Always looks like they just crawled out of some guys bed they went home with after doing too many shots at Bogies.

When I first got to LSU, the in trend for a year or so was tennis shorts. Was pretty nice walking around campus with girls wearing that dressed up instead of these homeless looking outfits they wear now

The Korean works for a Japanese restaurant and the Chinese guy's family owns a Japanese restaurant.
Their opinions hold some weight

agreed. Anyway, the vast majority of sushi places in the US are Chinese owned anyway, from what I see and hear.....
I recall when it was all the rage in Beijing (early 90s), and what they consumed and lauded was definitely not on par with what was available in NYC at the time).

I love the sushi threads. They usually bring out a nice food fight between the contributors of this forum.
I love sushi. All kinds of sushi, really. I can eat a nice plate of sashimi and I can also enjoy some fried, sauce-covered concoction. Mainly because they tend to taste good and I don't fool myself to dining on "traditional sushi."
Last week I went to Geisha (which isn't that bad of a place if you like rolls and Livingston people) and ordered some salmon sashimi, a rainbow roll (which I love), a crawfish roll (I only order these at Geisha because they taste good), and a spicy tuna roll.
Set me back like $40 after a salad and drink.
My favorite roll is the one served at Café Zen in Gretna. A massive roll stuffed with salmon, tuna, whitefish, avocado, shrimp tempura, snow krab, cucumber, and sweet egg. All rolled up and drizzled with their Hana Special sauce.
Love that roll so much I would kill for it. and then as my final meal before my execution, I would order that roll.
All that aside, no one in a restaurant in Baton Rouge gives a shite how you order or eat sushi. Eat it with your hands, chopsticks, a fork...no one cares. If your goal of eating at the sushi bar is for the sushi chef to nod his head at you because you know to dip the fish side down in the soy sauce, well then good for you.
I'll keep pairing my expensive toro sashimi with some special rolls and enjoying my meal.
