Headed up this Friday; never been up that way before. Any must-stops along the way? Here are my stops so far:

Billy’s/Kartchners (Krotz Springs)
Bourques (Port Barre)

I’ve also been told to stop at Pizza Shack in Opelousas (?) and Herby-K’s once I get there

Graysons in Clarence, LA. A little off the interstate at Natchitoches. Damn good BBQ and down home customer service (lol).

I like Quebedeaux's in Alec, then of course you'll need to stop and get some meat pies in Natchitoches.

You are never going to make it if you stop at all these places. LoL.

I used to drive it weekly and my stops were Kartchners for some cracklins (or Bourques for sausage bread) and then Natchitoches for meat pies.

Drove it quite a bit back in the day before 49 as well. There were all kinds of interesting little places along Hwy 1 but they are long gone.

I’m prob gonna leave around 10 or so... don’t gotta be there til 7. I’m bringing an ice chest so most of the stuff (boudin, meat pies, etc.) I can bring back home with me and enjoy over the weekend.

I’m gonna get down voted but I went to Lafayette a few weeks ago for a wedding. Made a trip to Teets for sausage. Been hearing on this board for years that it was the best around but I was disappointed. Casing was tough as boot leather, over smoked and dry. I will stick to my Down Home smoked sausage from now on.

After Krotz Springs, take 71 through Lebeau, Bunkie, Lecompte. It's actually shorter time wise in spite of the lower speed and the scenery is more enjoyable. Stop in Lecompte at Lea's and grab a ham sandwich and a pecan pie.

I like to stop at Stelly's in Lebeau this time of year because they usually have locally grown sweet potatoes either in the little grocery store or at the front door of the restaurant and they are delicious!

I'm so sad to have to agree with you. My last stop was disappointing. A fruit pie had a mostly tasteless filling (peach, IIRC), the plate lunch was school-cafeteria quality, and the old standby ham sandwich was stingily filled with mediocre bits of ham.

I've had the sandwiches twice in the last month. There was plenty of ham, both the sliced and the "debris" on the sandwiches. The ham there is delicious. We had pecan pie and the chocolate and both were good. The crust is not my favorite, but that chocolate filling was great.

I've never eaten a plate lunch there. I can't miss the sandwich. I did have a roast beef sandwich once and the roast was delicious. I wasn't crazy about it on a hamburger bun, though.
