You have to buy six bottles of liquor and only six, and the objective is to get booze that will please the most people who might hang out on a Friday night while also kind of impressing them that you get good shite. But you also can't spend too much money. What do you get?

For those who hang out with me on a Friday? 6 bottles of beam

Realistically 6 different bottles of bourbon.

Mid priced bourbon. Two different types like a Basil Hayden and a Makers 46. A bottle of vodka. Doesn't matter because with a crowd it will be the women having mixed drinks. A decent but not expensive tequila. A flavored or spiced rum. And a bottle of single barrel scotch. Whichever brand you prefer.

1 Bourbon
1 Rum
1 Tequila
2 Vodka
1 Gin

That would be my guess, but some people don't like gin

Yeah, I don't got for gin, but some do, so it seems smart to have some on hand. Why do you go with two vodka and not a single malt or some other scotch? Because more people enjoy vodka than scotch, I assume, but you wouldn't be worried about not having anything for the scotch drinkers?

What labels of rum, scotch, and tequila would you get?

Rum would be Bacardi, Captain, or Cruzan. Depends on the time of year. Something flavored from Cruzan if summer. Captain in the fall. Bacardi is just a good all around.

Scotch I prefer MacAllan.

Tequila I would get Patrón or Don Julio. But if we're just making Margaritas then Patrón. Also keeping in mind the budget.

Six seems pretty easy as most of our gatherings consist of 2-3 different bottles. Maybe 4 if we a making Margaritas or Rum Punch from scratch.

I would have
Herradura $$ or Jimador $
Cointreau $$ or Trip sec $
Bayou rum or Bacardi
2 Napa Cabernets
1 Pinot Gri

Rum? I don't know anyone that drinks rum, but it will give you a well rounded bar

This scenario doesn't really exist for me. My stuff is not to impress people, it's about quality and cost (you'll see I have a number of Costco bottles). It's difficult to impress people and not spend much. When we have more than two other couples over, we pull out bigger, cheaper but "decent enough" bottles. Narrowing to six:

Bulleit bourbon
Kirkland Tennessee Whiskey
Bacardi white rum
Kirkland silver tequila
Kirkland vodka (American, it's cheaper and we are not vodka enthusiasts to care)
Bombay sapphire gin

For a smaller group I'll bring out middle of the road stuff.
One bourbon under <$60, Noah's Mill for now
A decent Irish whiskey, Bushmills 16 for now
Euphrosine gin
Bayou rum silver or select
Atelier Vie Toulouse Red (red absinthe)
Tito's

I appreciate what you're saying. Not so much to impress people, but to make them feel like you made an effort for them.
