re: Settle a pizza topping argument for us...

There are different sauces, but to me a pizza is not a pizza without some sort of sauce.. Whether it's an oil base or white sauce or red sauce. With the exception of pizza Margherita since whole tomatoes or slices are used as sauce. A crust without cheese and sauce would just be a crust. Once cheese and sauce are added, it's pizza. Anything else is a topping.
If sauce is a topping, then this is a pizza by that logic.

If sauce is a topping, then this is a pizza by that logic.

Margarita pizza is all about the sauce.
Depends on where you look. Many traditional Naples recipes do not contain a sauce. Pizza Margherita is just tomatoes and no actual sauce in many places.

I think we're going to have to agree on a definition of "sauce" before we proceed any further

Just because they charge extra for sauce, doesn't make it a topping. The only way "sauce" would be a topping is if it were in addition to the sauce base, as in a pesto drizzle or something.

Not really. 2 pieces of bread do not make a sandwich. But put something between them and you have a sandwich.
Put some toppings on that crust and then you have a pizza

A lot of the pizzas I make at home have no sauce.
My favorite is fig goat cheese, capicola, and arugula.
Is that not pizza?

I make something similiar with an drizzle of olive oil on the crust, regular goat cheese and prosciutto.

No it's not, a pizza without sauce or cheese is just Focaccia.

Have you ever been to one of those places?

If I can choose the type of sauce, it is a topping.
I tend to agree with this. Most of the pizzas I cook have no sauce, just a drizzle of olive oil. Therefore making sauce optional, therefore making it a topping.

I've got a bill saying she has not if we are talking about anywhere in Italy

Closest I could claim would be Keste, pretty sure everything had a sauce.

Well I guess the recipes I've always Googled lied.
It's no big deal either way.. But if we are putting pizza from Naples right here up with American sloppy pizza just in the name of a toppings war.. would we not consider all renditions of pizza Margherita? Many do not have tomato sauce.
Glad I like you because you love to argue with me on here, ya turd.

Mrs FT is working so I have to battle with someone. If Jones was here I would go after him.
He should take you to better restaurants.
Gotta remind me to make some of my Dago Aunt's Stromboli next year for the jamboree. No sauce, it uses grease instead.
