Putting burgers and chicken on the grill today and decided to head over to Sams since it's closer.

I had not been in there in years, have a membership for their gas since they use Amex.

They recently did a reorg of the store and added counters for meat and fish, prime which on the surface is not bad. But a closer look reveals more lipstick on a pig as it's mostly the same prime they had stacked next to the other meat. Their prime is not a better deal than Costco.

Prices are not better, pain to move around, selection is worse, more people in there for commercial reasons.

I did not see any upside to going back in there for food and misc stuff like paper towels.

Am I missing something here if you have both in your city?

I have memberships to both, I think they each have their strengths. Costco is my place for meat, wine, and, of course, bison hot dogs. Sam's has a better selection of familiar brands.

BTW Sam's has premier protein bars $4 right now. Damn good deal.

Did not know that. Once a surveyed the area I made up my to get what I needed and get the hell out of there.

I did try and see what snacks they had, like asian mix type stuff and it was also lacking.

Costco imo.

Sam's took a turn for the worse when they started allowing non business owners in

Sams because they help is consumers by identifying what is on each row along with ID numbers. Costco has no such sinage other than numeric but with no key or map you have to guess what is where and by then, they moved it. All just marketing to force you to walk the entire store.
I'll do costco for specific Kirkland stuff but thats about it.

The thing that irks me about Costco prime beef is, I don't always need 4 16 oz ribeyes. Although I know I can freeze them...something about freeze g prime beef feels wrong to me.

The wife and I usually split a single ribeye or strip...so I don't buy beef from Costco unless they are doing one of those roadshow events.

Costco blade tenderizes their prime and choice beef. It’s not safe to eat it unless cooked med-well to well. The only cuts that aren’t blade tenderized are bone-in. Blade tenderization effectively turns those nice looking prime cuts into hamburger meat as far how it should be cooked. It’s a damn shame too that they insist on doing it. Prime beef doesn’t need it.

I’m shocked at how few people realize that they’re doing this.

Here’s a good LINK if you care to know.

Yeah, I think it's one of those you're totally fine until you aren't type things. There's a chance that it could move harmful bacteria from the surface to the interior, not a certainty.

And it could just make you pee out your butt. Or maybe it could be worse. Just depends. You're fine until you aren't.

Why not just go to their meat counter?

Hit and miss, depending on location. Not impressed overall with their choice and hard to find prime beef. Their Texas Star steaks (select) are hot garbage.

a place that doesn't blade tenderize the meat. Hate that costco does that on their cut steaks, unlike you get a whole primal

edit: saw someone else already posted more detailed answer above.

I've never been to one outside lafayette area but these have a big prime selection. I read on here that the ones in Baton Rouge are pretty bad though
