At the recommendation from this thread,

LINK

I bought a roux spoon from this guy (Spoonman) on 12/10. Was going to be a Christmas gift for my son. I got a note that it shipped on 12/19. Didn’t come in time for Christmas and I called his number on Friday 1/3. He said he was out of town and would check into on Monday. Didn’t hear back so I left him a vm last week. No reply and tried again today but his mailbox is full and won’t take messages. Pretty disappointed. I guess at this point I can try for a refund thru Amex.

Did he give you any tracking with the shipment?

I almost ordered some for Christmas, but as pretty as they are, I found the price was too high for a roux spoon. I have some other handmade spoons from somewhere else that were not that much and are comparably pretty.

Your situation sounds flaky.

No link to a tracking number. Just an email that it had been shipped via “standard shipping”.

That’s what I did today. Gave him ample time to respond.

$40 for a sapele spoon, wow. I have some leftover sapele, I should make one. I could probably make 100 or so spoons

I placed an order with him that took a long time around the holidays. He answers emails sporadically and I eventually received that item and another item as a sort of 'sorry'. I was told he had a family emergency so I cut him slack. Never got a tracking number. It just showed up in my mailbox one day I believe from Ohio.

Not sure where you are located, but Brandon's in Amite carries a line of roux spoons called Rouxtensils that looks better than that Spoonman's stuff. I've bought a few for gifts.

I bought a couple similar to those from a woodworker at the Red River Revel several years ago for $15 each. Use them on almost every cook; not just for roux.

They are starting to get banged up and faded, but I guess I'll wait for the Revel in the fall to look for replacements.

Rouxtensils

I have one of these and reach for it a lot as it is heavy duty. I prefer the spoon man ergonomics a little more but not by much.

Eta: cgrand may be able to get in touch with the rouxtensil maker for direct sales

Made mine out of a piece of cypress left over from making my big crawfish pot paddle. Cost me about $5 for the piece of 1 x 6 cypress to make the seafood pot paddle and my roux paddle with enough left over to make more.

It's an easy DIY project and if you want to use more exotic wood, then go for it, but the cypress roux paddle had been with me for over 10 years now and still working like it should.
