And my fiancée still gets all embarrassed when I politely tell the waiter that we will order our entree when our app arrives. I'm not a dick about it, but man does it piss me off.
I hate ordering an app and entree together. i feel like I'm at applebee's doing that whole 3 item for $10 or whatever.
I don't always (really ever now) have time to enjoy dining out at a restaurant. I also need to choose a more kid friendly place, so that brings me toward the types of place that want you in/out quickly. It makes me appreciate the take your time, anticipate your next move, tell the chef to start your entree w/o you knowing it types of places.
Europe has America beaten on this hands down

I've always thought ordering the app and entree at the same time was the more accepted practice in a typical higher-end dining situation, but I wouldn't say it's wrong to do it the other way, if that's how you want to go.

In higher end places I order everything from app to dessert at once. I know and trust that they will pace my meal accordingly. Very rarely has this ever been a problem.
But all the other non-high end places, I order seperately.

I think what you're getting at is the difference in service between someone who waits for a long term living and someone who waits as a temp job in between classes.
No, I am just saying that a core of professionals brings up the quality of the entire city's FOH staff.

There it is. Nicely said.

I hate it when a server looks at me while they are speaking to me. I mean who the frick do they think they are? Typical college kids and Baton Rouge attitude.
You are a buffoon.

If this is what bothers you about service then you're probably one of those who enjoys white zinfandel, has your initials embroidered on your shirt sleeves
I do not drink white zinfandel because it tastes like alcohol fortified fruit juice. I have however had some fine red zins, which I drink with beef. lol

If it is, then I always do it wrong
Mainly because I want my app started on as quickly as possible (I'm always hungry) and it gives me time to think about my entree. I know that higher end places will time them right, but sometimes I don't know what I want to eat until I've looked over the menu a few hundred times hahahaa. At least if I have an app ordered, I know my indecisiveness won't hinder me from eating in the next half hour ;)
I am never hungry enough for dessert, so ordering it from the start would be a waste for me.

Look smegmaface, I have dined at fine restaurants all over the the World, Maxim's in Paris, Charlie Trotter's and many others, I am well familiar with great service. The secret to good service is to pull it out of a maybe not so great server. I learned from someone who had people jumping over themselves to get his table.

Restaurant service
Is the absolute last thing I worry about when dining out.
1. Food Taste
2. Value for said food
3. Atmosphere
4. Service

i agree...i've found that if i'm civil, polite, and personable to the server, they'll at least do their best to treat me right. i've had very few experiences that i would truly call bad service.

I agree 100%. I have been at a table where my dad sent back a 1500.00 bottle of wine. The restaurant handled it gracefully and no complaints. The server was compenasted handsomely for his tact. The wine was vinegar and we asked him to taste it. It is all about attitude and demeanor.

I can't say that I have been all over the world, but I have eaten at Daniel, Per Se, and the Chimes(right here in BR)!. I have no explanation for your ability to find nothing about the service you receive even the least bit annoying. I, however, find it annoying when a server is encroaching upon my personal space by standing on my left and serving with their right hand. Maybe that doesn't qualify for bad service, but I don't like it.
Why are people discounting the value of a properly trained waiter? They make the dining experience so much more enjoyable.

i've heard people at adjacent tables speak to the wait staff as if they were subhuman, for absolutely no reason...imo, if you don't know how to behave around other people, you should just stay home.

No doubt. I expect good food first and foremost. I usually only eat at places that have decent service. But, the food will get me to return to a place, instead of shoddy service being the problem. Most people who complain about crappy serivice probably drink iced tea and tip 15%.
