$700ish range
What? A range for $700? Is that a 24" wide one or something? When I took out my 36" cooktop it was something like $4000 to put in a free standing range, and I didn't get duel fuel oven or self cleaning or one of the fancy brands. You really talking about a $700 range?
I'd love to replace mine, that I rebuilt after it went under water in Katrina, since we have to hand light the burners and the oven is close to worthless. We're using a Breville counter top oven for most everything, and just keep a lighter on the backsplash. If I could replace this thing for $700 I'd do it in a heartbeat. Even the cheap ones I looked at replacing it with, I think the company is Blue Star, were $4000+.
The dual fuel Wolfs made my eyes pop out of my head.

this is just the drop in cook top, not oven combo

awesome thanks for the great responses! so i'm looking at a couple hundred bucks for the gas line install..i assume if i already have the range they can hook it up at the same time the gas line is run.
final question; i have a microwave (with little vents on bottom) above my stove now. will i need to get a real vent for this or will i be ok with the existing setup?
apologize for all the questions..i'm new to the whole gas stove thing.
i'm probably going to end up with a GE based on the comments in this thread and what i can afford right now.

well yes..i was looking at quite a few stainless steel ranges in this range with gas burners that had good reviews..this was at a big box retailer..not a specialty gas shop with the super high-end stuff..i'm not ready to drop that kind of money on a gas range.

I think you will be fine. When we replaced ours I took out the vent entirely. It was disgusting and I likethe way it looked without it. I'm going to do something decorative with that area. It's against some kind of builder rules, so I left the hole there, just gotta drill thru bottom of cabinet and pull it down. I do switch on the ceiling fan every now and then, but I'm still glad we got rid of the vent hood.
But yeah, you should be fine.
Mine is a cooktop, have had for 2 years, no problems.

Not to steal the thread or anything, but this got me thinking.... anyone of you guys have experience with a conduction top? They seem to have good reviews, but i personally don't know anyone with one.

I don't see how anything can be better than fire.

well, thats what i thought too. but, you don't waste heat/energy with it supposedly. It works with magnets and the only thing that gets hot is the area that the pot is touching. That being said you can only use stainless steel or cast iron pots. Unless you buy this disc that you can put on the burner that will transfer the heat to your other types of pots. Seems pretty cool

Same. I'd rather be cooking on the old school electric coils than on our stupid fricking glass top. A bitch to clean, takes forever to heat up. Why do people buy these?

ok i upped my budget slightly to include a 5th burner (based on your recommendations) and i'm still under $1k..thoughts on this one?
LINK
notably it adds a 5th burner and goes up to 17,000 BTU vs 15,000 on the others.
other than that and the look, its basically the same otherwise as the $700 units.

hey i just had that little coiled thingie i would stick in a glass of soup and plug into the wall.
on more than one occassion it fell out and caught on fire.
so piedmont is estimating around $400 to run a line 5 feet to my gas range.

considering this runs under the house in my crawlspace and you can get to it super easily..pisses me off. i already have lines running back and forth since my HVAC, water heater and fireplace are gas now.

any suggestions on a cheaper way to get the install done? can any plumber handle this?

Yes. Any plumber. I think ours was 200. Didn't take long.

I had gas ranges for 30 years. Hated them. Got a glass top that is now 14 years old. If I ever replace it will be with another glass top.

Whatever brand you go with, if you buy from Sears check it before you take it home. My parents just got screwed. Sears sent the wrong size but wouldn't replace it by the time they opened it up because the model was discontinued about a month after my parents got it.
