Friend of ours works for the food distributor that provides food for a lot of schools. He hooks us up with teh square pizzas every now and then. They're not as good as they used to be. They use turkey sausage on them now, which is terrible.

I'll still crush them after a few beers though.

Thursday was fried chicken day. Always with rice dressing, corn, roll, little square cake, and a carton of milk.

The chicken was actually good too. Nobody skipped lunch on Thursday. It's basically the only thing St. Landry Parish schools got right.

My school was far from fancy. Built in the 40's and very plain Jane, but it had a kitchen and all meals were made in the kitchen, but that's the way it was. All of the lunch ladies had kids in the school. I remember we could smell the homemade rolls baking before lunch and that made us awfully hungry. They weren't as good as they smelled, though.

My favorite meals were the square pizza and fish sticks. They actually made the pizza dough etc... I'm sure the fish sticks were frozen. Had them every Friday. I went to a Catholic school.

When you have a large % of schools operating in buildings that do not have kitchens, you have to feed the children somehow. Many of those third party vendors cook food that same morning and deliver it immediately.

I'm not sure if this is meant in earnest or not. I'm pro public schools...I want purpose-built buildings, not the "illusion of choice" charter schools shoehorned into whatever. I'm 100% public educated in rural LA, live in semi-rural LA now, and I can't think of a single public school outside of the metro charters that doesn't have a fully equipped kitchen. Hell, my school system teaches culinary arts at the HS level and has incredible kitchen classrooms....even the big public HS where I teach non-credit baking classes has four big home ec classrooms and a full cafeteria.

I guess in urban areas there are third party lunch providers...but in the country (ie, most of LA schools), there are definitely still fully equipped cafeterias.

Me too, Gris - Every Friday was fish stick day and I went to the regular school. One thing kids everywhere owed to the Catholics was Friday fish stick day. back when they had nice thick fish sticks that were actually fish, with no potatoes added.

This reminds me how much I loved the cornbread dressing on holiday lunch days.

Yes, but many school don't have kitchens or even lunch rooms for the kids to eat. Especially outside of our area in more densely populated/urban areas. Makes sense they'd have to get an outside company to provide hot meals for the kids if they want to feed them.

There's not all these schools with fully functional kitchens letting them sit there untouched while they order pre-cooked school meals.

Fair enough. Surely you understand why some would have the need to do it, even if you don't support that type of school. That's an entirely different topic, which I'd have never replied to

The best weekly rotation from Calcasieu schools in 00's:

Monday - red beans and rice
Tuesday - chicken nuggets
Wednesday - spaghetti (pile the spaghetti inside the roll. I crave that to this day)
Thursday - fried chicken
Friday - fried catfish

That said, I am forever sick of damn milk as a drink. Never again.

I remember the square pizza in elementary. Was one of my favorites .
The “old” ladies that worked in the cafeteria would walk around with a damp dish towel and wipe our faces when we were finished eating. Spreading germs? What germs!

Don't lie, if someone handed you a bag of milk and a pointy straw, you'd go to town on that bad boy. Assuming you didn't accidentally stab the straw all the way through the bag and create a huge mess.

I loved gumbo or chili of Friday and then out to play! When I was in school, we actually had recess.

Elementary school in the '70's. Oh, and paddles, too.

NOLATiger,

Yep. Got to school early enough to play (30 minutes), had a morning recess (20, I think), played after we ate (30 minutes, at least), and an afternoon recess (20 minutes). That's at least 3 times what's mandated by law today.

Man, I never ever drink it but I still love me some milk. I find cold milk to be so refreshing.
