Was reminiscing about this with my friend, as his kid still eats those classics like we did way back when. It made me think of that square pizza and traveling nachos and they had avalanches to wash it all down with. What do you remember?

The Catholic elementary school my kids went to in Acadia Parish would even have chicken gumbo, meatball stew, etc.

Now, in a Houston suburb government school (world better education, though) it seems like it’s hot dog, corn dog, chicken nuggets and frozen cheese pizza every day.

My high schooler and 6th trader bring their own lunch a lot now, usually leftovers from night before.

On a little tray, or all mixed up in the bag?

--Red beans & rice on Monday, w/a square of sweet cornbread
--Dry as dust baked chicken, w/green beans cooked w/potatoes
--World's greasiest lasagna, with the soft/tender milk bread dinner rolls, served w/little cups of honey & peanut butter
--White beans & rice and baked fried catfish
--gumbo on Fridays, usually with that dry arse chicken recycled into it

WE were thrilled when we got a salad bar & the occasional taco or square pizza. I'm old, cafeterias used to cook actual food rather than just heat up processed stuff. I understand that some don't even make food anymore--just contract with third-party providers who deliver the cooked foods.

Spinach the day after the grass was cut in grade school at St Anthony on Canal street

In high school, red beans on Mondays, always had hamburgers if you wanted that any day.

tray, but as i recall most of our cafeteria lunches came in little trays like this: (and you know they never got properly washed, made us tougher)

some kind of entree, soggy grean beans or broccoli, maybe some watered down mashed potatoes, and of course a small carton of milk

When you have a large % of schools operating in buildings that do not have kitchens, you have to feed the children somehow. Many of those third party vendors cook food that same morning and deliver it immediately.

I'm sure schools would love to all have the luxury of operating out of a fancy building with a full kitchen.

Friend of ours works for the food distributor that provides food for a lot of schools. He hooks us up with teh square pizzas every now and then. They're not as good as they used to be. They use turkey sausage on them now, which is terrible.

I'll still crush them after a few beers though.

My wife and I still talk about the peanut butter crunch bar served in the 70’s public school lunch. Peanut butter, rice crispies, and who else knows. Just remember this item over anything else.
