I liked when that spot was "Jacks" before Kivas.
This. Someone should have mentioned the Distefanos in the thread about dysfunctional Louisiana restaurant families, though.

Kiva can cook. Too bad lots of the Portobello's food seems like it was pre-packaged.
I could be crazy, but did Kiva or a family member cook food at the golf driving range on Siegen several years back?

I'm pretty sure Kiva used to cook at the driving range. I could be wrong though

That was some good. We used to call in lunches there.

Actually, I remember it in its earlier location, on Airline not too far from Siegen.
The waitress accidently dumped a huge glass of red wine on me when I was 7. Probably why I hate red wine to this day. I will drink it but dont prefer too

Pretty sure Kivas used to advertise hard on BR Sports radio.
Am I right?

They consolidated Portobello's and Kiva's into that one location on Jefferson and Old Hammond.
They kind of took the best of both menus and focused on that rather than trying to compete with both brands out there. The Bocage location is still pretty good.

That was not Kiva. It was his brother Steve. He could really cook good.

Best sensation salad in town. But that's all they had going for them IMO

Well actually they weren't bad. It was the grandson Joey with the problems and really by then Miss Fannie and Joe were dead.
Miss Fannie Distefano had the original Village. Joker son Joe was the Maitre D at Jack Sabins. When Jack Sabin (who always wore loud vests) died of a heart attack, Joe Distefano bought it. After he closed on Airline he opened Jacks Grill. He was pretty sick by then and his wife ran it. 2nd wife.

Was distefanos on airline across from Don Carter's?
That building has been vacant for a while. But, somebody is fixing it up. Any clue what's going there?

That is where Jack Sabins was located. It was an old building and in the early 80's Joe knocked down the old and built that one with his residence in the back. It hit at a time when a lot of out of town competition came in, the economy tanked and he had a big note. It's what ultimately closed him down.
It is now going to be the new building for Baton Rouge group of Scientology which has a smaller building down the street from that one.

Had my rehearsal dinner at the Airline location.
LOVED that place. I never found Portobello's food to be remotely close.

Thanks for clearing that up.
Who would have thought that some of the best lunches in town could be found at the golf driving range on Siegen? I guess the word never got out, because I don't think he lasted very long there.

I thought Kiva's wound up in the shopping center on Bluebonnet where Alabasha's and Cadillac Cafe is. Or maybe that was Primo's I'm thinking of?

WHat was the place on Jefferson and Old Hammond called back in the late 90's? It was owned by the twin sisters that owned the BR locations of Semolinas but that was their more upscale restaurant. It was only open for a few years but I can't remember the name to save my life.

I don't recall the place. I did like some of the menu items at Semolinas. I know that one of the sisters is married to former politician Jim Brown, and Jim's house was close to Jefferson & Old Hammond.
