Where do you live?

TW can be good for what it is in the same way other large stores are.

If you are really experienced it can be great.

Otherwise if you live in a city and you are not knowledgeable I’d go to a small wine shop instead. Much better curated wines at various price points and typically much more knowledgeable staff.

Is the old $20 now $40?

Considering that $25 in 1995 is worth $52 today, yeah, I would say you could use some re-calibrating regarding expectations

Oregon Pinot Noir is my favorite. Rainstorm, Acrobat. Many others. Rouses usually has them.

I tried that and again it seems very young and tart.

Best red wine under $35 is the Venge Scouts Honor....a red blend with 75% zinfandel...wonderful wine for that grilled steak! Parker gives it 92-93 pts....every year.....Scout was the winemakers Dog!

I drink a lot of red wine. Too much, I'd wager. I've noticed my tastes have changed over time, and even find times that I'm drinking wine and not enjoying it at all.

This is going to sound crazy because it's <$10 at Total Wine, but Bogle Cabernet beats out a large % of the more expensive red wines we rotate through.

... to the point that I've started getting a case delivered from Total Wine and trying to convince my husband to stop buying anything else (unless it is something we love like Turnbull for a nicer occasion).

A lot of the $15-$25 wines he likes to pick up don't even hold a candle to Bogle for me.

Side note - The Bogle winemaker won Wine Enthusiast's Winemaker of the Year this past year.

This kind of signals how hard it is to find quality cabs at that price point. Its honestly almost impossible now, cab is wildly overpriced overall.

Most people are better off finding other varietals they like that are undervalued, much better QPR (Quality Price Ratio)

I like trying something new. Will get some Bogle at TW this week.

Have you tried the Bogle Merlot too? What you think?

I think the Bogle Merlot for the price point is not bad, to be honest.

Is it good wine? No.

But for the price point you could do a lot worse.

Merlot is another undervalued wine. If you look at non-Bordeaux Blends, non-Cali Merlots you can find some very good deals once you get above $20

The previously mentiond Lilian Ladouys (which is a Bordeaux blend) is an EXCELLENT wine for 25-30 dollars. You can get it at Total Wine.

I suggest looking at Portugal and Spain. You can still find excellent value for world class wines. Argentina and Chile are good as well, as is surprisingly parts of Italy. You can get some IGT/Super Tuscans for amazing deals (and some have gotten obscenely priced like Sassicaia and Tiganello)

A great resource is a guy who has a youtube channel named Attorney Somm.

He has many series of videos for wines he likes at various price points. He routinely does for wines at the 20-25 dollar price point, then 40-50ish, and so on.

Some of the ones mentioned aren't easy to find, but many are very easy to find at TW and places like that. I have found some excellent value wines because of him

Sterling has a good cabernet as well. Usually $11-15.

Chile and Spain are the highest quality for that price point in Cab.

France and Italy are better for their reds but can be a little more.

Napa cabs that are not mass produced will be expensive but there are definitely good ones out there. Peju is my favorite and their lowest level vintages are in the $60-$70 range. Frei Brothers is Sonoma but that’s a good Cab for $30-$40.

Same... I almost exclusively buy natural wines these days.. especially, gamay/beaujolais/grenache/cotes du rhone... The missus buys a lot of Oregon pinot noirs...

Luckily, we have quite a few wine shops in walking distance with very good selections for the stuff we like..
