Been quite a while since I've boiled live crabs and planning on boiling for about 30 people next Saturday.

Couple Qs for those that do crabs more than me:

1. If buying by the pound, what's the general rule per person? I typically do about 4 lbs per person for crawfish.

2. If buying by the hamper, how many pounds are typically in a hamper, or how many crabs?

3. #1s vs #2s -- I'm seeing prices at between $2.50-$3.00 / lb for 2s and $4-$5 /lb for 1s.Thoughts on which to get and how many of each? Do those prices seem about right?

4. For anyone in the NOLA Area -- any rec on places with good product and good prices? I've called Kenny's in Slidell, Michaels in Metairie and Seafood Pot in Destrahan. I'll make a bit of a trip for good stuff and good prices!

hamper should be 5.5 dozen for "large" crabs.

I have always done 1/2 dozen per person and we usually do shrimp too and always have extra when doing big boils. Now if it is just family we would destroy a 1/2 dozen per boil so you need to know your crowd.

I personally am fine with 2's, that is usually what we catch on the coast anyhow. You can probably find female 2's for $1/crab if you look in more costal areas.

The only place I've bought live crabs locally is at the Seafood Lot in Westwego. There are several booths that handle live crabs and the ones I've dealt with sell by the dozen, not by the pound.

Haven't bought any in over a year so I have no clue about how they are being priced right now.

Call Pinchers in Bayou Caddy…they may have the best hamper prices. Crabs are not plentiful, so this may be an expensive boil. It’s shrimp season now too, and Pinchers may have some nice fresh shrimp.

If boiling for a bunch of people I would buy #2’s unless you just got money to throw around. I will do #1’s usually only in small boils.

Also I have had times when the #1’s are empty with barely any meat. The #2’s are always full.

I bought 2 dozen number 2s yesterday and it was 16lbs.

I would get number 2s for a larger group. Expect to pay $2.50-3.00#. Only time I buy 1s is if just for my immediate family.

A bushel is 5 dozen or 60 crabs.

I would figure 5 crabs per person, a lot of people dont like peeling crabs.

I buy all my crabs from Cajun Crab Connection in Des Allemands. You have to call and order them though.

False, my son works at a crab dock and that's definitely not the case.

This. They are running early this year. All over the beach at Grand Isle last weekend.

That doesn't mean prices will be down though. Crabs are pricey.

Things may have changed quickly, but over here in MS the largest dock owner I know said they were not plentiful…enough to boil for a reasonable price at his boil room in downtown BSL.

M Hood Fishing on YouTube will show you the way.

Westwego Shrimp lot has the best prices. They’re by the dozen too.
