Brush off the dust and get back on that there horse.

Oh when the heck does true blood come back?

Really good advice flying around lately. Can someone explain the 3500 calorie deficit for one pound of weight loss? Is that weekly? And 3500 off of what? I am just not grasping this concept.

Thx. Keep on keeping on!

i tried writing it out but it just seemed confusing. heres a copied article:

The basic rules of thumb for healthy weight loss are to: 1)lose one pound of fat you have to burn 3,500 more calories more than you consume and 2)lose only 1-2 pounds per week. So if your goal is to lose 1 pound per week, that means that over the week’s time, you want to burn 3,500 calories more than you eat. You could do this by adding an activity each day that burns 500 calories. A better approach is to split the 500 calories between exercise and food - for example, eat 250 calories less of food and burn 250 calories doing exercise.

yeah .. there's 3500 calories in a pound of body fat ... the average person that is lightly to moderately active burns about 2200 calories a day ... so if you take in about 1200 calories in a day and do nothing outside of just going through your standard day, you have created a 1,000 calorie deficit for the day ... if you do that consistently over a week, you will have a 7,000 calorie deficit and will lose 2 pounds that week ...

if you work in any type of exercise that maybe burns about 500 calories a day (like walking briskly for 45 minutes), then you will add an extra pound a week of weight loss generally ... heavier people actually burn more calories naturally than lighter people do ... this is why people will initially lose large amounts of weight, but slow down the pace once they get lighter ... you actually have to work harder to lose weight, the lighter you get ... myth can prolly attest to this ...

screw EVERY gimmicky diet you have ever seen, every wonderful weight loss pill or powder you see on TV ... screw Alli and all that crap ... it is all about creating a calorie deficit .. plain and simple ... losing weight should SAVE you money .. not COST you money !! eat less, move more .. it's that simple ..

just burn off more than you take in every day and you will lose weight ... different people have different metabolic levels ... some with the aforementioned calorie deficits may lose 4 or 5 pounds in a week because they just naturally burn more ... some people with slower metabolisms might only lose a pound a week doing that ... if this is the case, look into methods to raise your metabolic level ... things like green tea can be worked in to help with that ...

if you wanna make Saturday a cheat day and drink beer and not care what you eat .. then plan for that weekly .. stick to about 1200 calories all week .. then, on Saturday, if you take down 6 miller lites .. that's about 600 calories .. then just track all the good, sinful things you eat that day .. you will wind up taking in about 3500 calories on a good "i don't give a crap what i eat" saturday ... so, for the week, you took in 10,700 calories .. your body naturally burned about 15,400 calories .. so you have a 4,700 calorie deficit there (about 1.3 pounds lost that week) .. make sure you burn about 575 calories a day for the six days additional and you will still lose almost 2-1/2 pounds a week while still enjoying yourself one day a week ...

like everyone in here says .. bust your arse .. get to your target weight, and weigh yourself regularly .. if you have gained five pounds .. no biggie .. you know how to lose it at that point ..

Hulk,
Good to have ya join "the club". Yes, as said before it will be a while to get to where you want to be, but you have to want to. Which, it sounds like you do. That I believe is the key to changing anything in your life. Everyone has to "snap". Whether it's quitting smoking, working out, etc.

This place is good to check in and read about other people's struggles. I know it has helped me a ton and I suspect it has helped others.

I'm 6'1" and started around 270lbs and now I'm down to 240 and in week 3 of P90X. I could never have imagined myself where I am currently a year ago. I've been so fat for so long, I couldn't imagine a different me.

But after you hit a few "mini goals" you start to gain confidence. I look forward to reading your progress and seeing your breakthroughs.

Congrats on taking the first step!

i was thin..but then over an 8ish year hell (pre, during and post divorce) i stopped caring completely. now that storm has passed (mostly) and i decided i didn't want to spend the next 10 years of my life fat.

when i looked at my racing bike hanging from the ceiling it made me sad and disgusted at the same time. sad because i knew what it was like to be competitive in a high speed bike race..and disgusted because at 257 pounds if i tried to get out and ride i would have probably trashed the carbon fiber frame or flatted out from putting to much weight on those tiny tires.

today i just finished a 53 mile ride with a mixed group..some cat1 and 2 racers in the mix..and i held on for 20 miles even riding pace in front for a few miles. that in and of itself is a miracle when i look at where i was one scant year ago..it took losing a good deal of weight for me to even consider getting out on the bike..much less tackling the climbs and long rides around here.

i'm telling you this becaue it doesnt have to be a long process..plan to kick arse for a year and see where you are. i can almost guarantee your life will be completely different. i was wearing a size 42 pants and THEY WERE TIGHT. today i'm wearing a standard pair of 34x34 levis and they're so loose i have to wear a belt.

keep in mind i cheated a TON last year..chasing women and drinking, etc..so i knocked off 50 with all those distractions..you can do better than me.

Cad

I want to start riding up on the levee but I have extremely limited deadbroke funding.

What is the cheapest most durable bike out there?

I like the look at a few of the $100.00 bikes at Walmart but I know bicycle enthusiasts hate the big box store bikes.

What should I get with LIMITED funding?

I'm in a tight 48.. Embarrassing to say the least, and frustrating because I have to shop at "big & tall" stores, and that = $$$. I would like to be able to shop at "normal people" stores, and even at the mall. I've been fat most of my life. Since the 3rd grade.. don't know how old that would be, like 7? 8? I was in Tae Kwon Do as a kid, as soon as I stopped, I ballooned out. I can't imagine a thin me either, so when it happens it'll be great. (Trying to stay positive and not think of any chance of failure, so I'll keep saying "when" instead of "if" )

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!

OMG you did not go there.

this is a slippery slope myth..i can talk bikes for days and days and days.

my other nickname is the 'bike whisperer' i have such a-hole friends.

ok, first..mountain or road? this is an important question if you're only buying one bike. think long and hard. mountain bikes are more fun...but there's a greater chance to get injured when you're whipping back through some wooded single-track..its also fun as shite.

mountain bike - fat tires, relaxed geometry, just damn fun to get out and ride on. nothing captures the spirit of being 10 years old again like a mountain bike.

road bike - i probably put 5000 miles on river road when i lived in baton rouge..up and down and up and down..catch the ferry across to plaquemine (is it still there?) but i gotta say..without hills road riding can get old. you mentioned levees..that's more suited to an off-road bike, ie mountain bike.

DONT GET A HYBRID. jacke of all trades master of none. decide what you want and then get a bike of that type.

now. as for buying. i'm a huge advocate of going used. why? because assholes with more money than brains buy top-end bikes and ride them once..hang them in the garage..then 5 years later sell it for a song to get rid of it. bikes doin't age like cars (for the most part)..i would be just as happy riding a 20 year old bike as a new one..they last and a good set of components should be there for a lifetime.

so where do you look? ok try the local bike shop and ignore the snobs and snickers. frick them. go in and ask to test ride a few bikes to get a feel for what you like. the biggest innovation in mtn bikes in the last 10 years is the new 29ers. which is a faggy way of saying they have 29 inch tires instead of 26..bigger tires..more rolling inertia..supposedly faster. whatever. there's a new buzz term every year.

after you've gotten on a couple..brands matter..not because of the name..but because of the geometry..one brand might fit you and another might not..who gives a shite about the brand if the bike fits???? they all ride about the same. dont believe the hype.

what do new bikes run? well you're gonna die but the bike snobs pay $10k for high end road bikes these days. waste. of. money. but whatever..they're into being 1337

how much should you pay? I would strongly suggest you set a budget of $500 and stay under that. YOU CAN BUY A GREAT BIKE FOR THIS AMOUNT. I can even show you NEW ones at that price.

check craigslist and also check & see if BR has any used bike exchanges. also check the little rip-tape signs at bike shops on the bulletin boards.

you can get a helluva deal off craigslist..$1500 bikes for $500 all day long..but you gotta know your size and kinda 'get lucky' that something pops up. also make sure you check it out first.

what frame material? you got 4 choices:
- aluminum
- steel
- carbon fiber
- titanium

titanium is strong as shite and you'll likely never need another frame ever...but they're VERY pricey.

carbon is my FAV..they suck up road vibrations like nobody's business and ride soooo sweet..but they're also pricey..AND..you wreck and you stand a chance of having to throw out your plastic bike baeacuse you tore the carbon frame. yep. into the trash. there is no 'repair' with carbon.

steel..oh the classic..steel is also a grewat material favored by old men and euro bike snobs..steel is a great material and its timeless and it rides like butter. but a good steel bike will also cost you.

aluminum. oh here we go. most likely you'll end up here. aluminum is R I G I D which means you'll feel every bump in the road..but it also translates to power..because its so rigid every ounce of energy you put into turning the pedals over translates into speed on the road.

having said all that..most new aluminum bikes come with carbon seat posts (what you sit on) and carbon front forks. having carbon in these 2 places means your $500 AL bike will ride more or less like a $5000 carbon. its all good.

so..summary:

- find a bike style
- ride various models at local bike shop
- check craigslist often..i can help you with keywords to ferret out all the bikes
- check local 'for sale' on bike bulletin boards
- BEST ONLINE PLACE EVER for used bikes..the classifieds at roadbikereview.com..however most deals are in the $1k range on there..and they are GREAT deals..but its probably more than you want to spend.

DO NOT
- go to dicks
- go to walmart

Finally, after you've done all that..I'll send you to a little website that has the best freaking bikes ever for the least amount of money:

bikesdirect.com

in fact i talked a co-worker into buying a $399 road bike for her boyfriend from there just last week..it came in in 2 days..i spent 15 minutes tightening a few bolts and airing up the tires..and good to go. great bike..great value. we can find you SHINY NEW road or mtn bike for undre $500 with kick-arse components from there.

shite..ok done. this is the tipe of the iceberg..i can go on for days and days here..better take this to the OT or something if you want to keep discussing

this is the best present you can ever give yourself..and its 'free'. like tigah said..you dont have to buy any expensive diet program (READ: FAIL) which you can't sustain by ordering their food, etc.

you gotta make the changes within your current eating..and its entirely possible.

potato chips, fast food, soft drinks..the reason these are so bad are first..you can knock back a bag of chips in one sitting (i know i sure as hell can)..look at the calories..you've consumed probably in excess of 700 calories and you didn't even feel it.

on top of that..the sugar spike from eating that actually makes you HUNGRIER so you eat more and more..sugar is just bad juju.

anyway..we're all pulling for you and this is cool as shite you're doing this while still vey young (yes 22 is young)

Have been reading and following along with the thread all along.

Joined Weight Watchers in October and have lost 23.6 lbs - averaging a little over a pound a week. Would love for the pace to be faster, but I know this is a lifestyle change, and I'll be doing it forever. And in these 4+ months, I haven't given up anything important to me - social activities, holiday parties, etc. Got about 80 lbs left to go...

279.8/256.2/179.8 (may adjust)

I've always been mature for my age, my dad used to tell me I was an 18 year old in a 13 year old's body, etc. Guess my parents raised me right?

P.S.
This is a very inspirational thread.. I'm very glad it's stickied. I hope it lasts for years to come ... What other forum can say they inspire people to live a healthier life?

On a somewhat side note, I have no idea how you have eaten the same foods for so long - that would drive me to quit! Variety is key for me.
