Welcome.

It can be done on diet alone. I dropped 100+ pounds before I even thought about exercising.

Low carb is the way to go. It just depends how low you are willing to go.

Just read back over the last several pages. People are always giving support and tips here.

Plenty of amazing success stories on here.

another solid day at the trough. cals under 1300, carbs under 60, sodium in check.

Welcome Ham. Diet is for weight loss, exercise is for fitness. Many do one or the other. Others do both.

I'm new, too, but welcome.

Maybe start by eliminating bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, sugar. Increase your veg and fruit consumption.

Oh, and three pounds down this week.

I love veggies and fruit. Are there any in particular that I should try to avoid?

When eating out, what's the typical "go to" in order to stay on track?

Ok ladies and gents. I'm posting in this thread for the first time.

I need support here.

Heaviest I've ever been and it's upsetting me. I don't think we need to talk about my weight, but I'll say I am looking to loose 25-30 pounds. I have little time for the gym or runs/cycling anymore beside for the weekends.

Do I need a diet or what? What diet? Completely cut carbs? Only eat chicken and fish?

I'm lost here.

I'll answer whatever y'all ask.

Thanks.

First off, welcome!!

Second off, how you lose the weight is entirely up to you. Most here will recommend some sort of grain-free diet. Be it a paleo diet or Atkins, most will recommend you cut out carbs from your diet. Personally, I recommend paleo. Keep meals simple. My meals are normally a protein, say chicken breast or steak or something and 2 servings of veggies. Between meals I'll snack on either a fruit or nuts, depending on what I have on hand and what I feel like eating.

Even if you decide to cut carbs, watch your calories. Go here and determing your BMR.. that is the amount of calories your body burns in a single day. Eat 500-700 less calories than that daily, depending on the number. 1 pound = 3600 calores. To lose one pound a week effortlessly, eat ~ 600 less calories than your BMR. Adding any exercise on top of that will speed up the process, but is lagniappe to weight loss.

As far as exercise goes, most people work out too hard, and/or too often. I recommend lifting very heavy once a week. 7 reps max, 5 seconds lift, 5 second drop. 1 set of each exercise, 5 exercises. One lower body workout (squats, deadlifts), one chest press (bench press, dumbbell press), one horizontal pull (rows), one vertical push (shoulder press), one vertical pull (pull ups, lat pulldowns). In between lift sessions, general cardio is a good idea. Jogging, walking. Whatever suits you on a day-to-day basis, and listen to your body. If you're legitimately tired, take a day off from exercise. Don't let that stop you from exercising when you're just feeling lazy.

If you have any other questions, just ask!

Eta

A big, BIG help is tracking your food. My Fitness Pal is a fantastic tracking site, even has an app for smartphones with a bar code reader to track on the go.

Ham, I do low carb, about 30 gms a day. Eating out is really only once a week, there is just too many hidden carbs and sodium for me to do it more than that, besides once you start preparing fresh meals its just so much better.
Speaking of eating out,I had the rare opportunity to catch my 18yr old son inbetween his activities to grab dinner. We went to our new Jasons Deli and while I should have stuck to the salad bar, I caved in and had the muffuletta. Bready and salty, I see a no cheat weekend in my future

Just checking in... havent posted since April

147/125/120

I've been maintaining at 125 after loosing about 20 pounds. I haven't really put in 100% effort since April when I went on a cruise. The lowest I've been was 118 right before the cruise. I think I'm finally ready to make that push to loose and keep off the last 5.

While I've been in this maintenance stage I still weigh myself every morning. It helps keep me honest and when i get to 127/128 I know I need to have a few good low carb days. I've also been keeping up with exercise doing 25 minutes of HIIT running outside every other day. Having kept up regular exercise for over a year is probably what I am most proud of with this whole thing...I DESPISED exercising before I decided to loose weight.

Even though I'm not posting much, I do read the thread pretty much every day. Keep up the good work everyone!

Hmm, I've been making some bad choices. One article said that low carbers should avoid grapes, mango, bananas and pineapple because they have a high sugar content. I have been snacking on grapes a lot.

Fruits Lowest in Sugar

Small Amounts of Lemon or Lime
Rhubarb
Raspberries
Blackberries
Cranberries

Fruits Low to Medium in Sugar

Strawberries
Casaba Melon
Papaya
Watermelon
Peaches
Nectarines
Blueberries
Cantaloupes
Honeydew melons
Apples
Guavas
Apricots
Grapefruit

Fruits Fairly High in Sugar

Plums
Oranges
Kiwifruit
Pears
Pineapple

Fruits Very High in Sugar

Tangerines
Cherries
Grapes
Pomegranates
Mangos
Figs
Bananas
Dried Fruit, such as dates, raisins, dried apricots, and prunes

Veggies are easier to know. High in carbs besides potatoes are carrots, beets, corn, peas, parsnips. (That's not a comprehensive list.) I eat carrots sometimes, anyway.

Drinking is what derails my diet the most. I drink Ultras or bourbon and water. I will do rum and diet coke on occasion.

We're gonna have to get that weight to help you any further

We only give the females a pass on that.

I'm on hour 38 of my Extended Special Edition Cadfast. First time, I have stuck to a Cadfast in a LONG LONG time.

I was horrible over the Hurricane and then we had our Fantasy Football Draft Party.

I have lots of ground to make up so I decided an Extended Special Edition Cadfast was in order to kick me back into Ketosis.

I'm also back to drinking just water or coffee for the next 24 days.

I'm in Full Hermit Bunker mode until Oct.1! And this time I mean it.

Bananas might be high in sugar but they are considered to be low glycemic

I wouldn't completely eliminate bananas

I would say I eat a banana every other day and I don't feel like it has slowed my weight loss
