Without having to read through all 400+ pages, can someone give me a quick rundown of some foods I should avoid at all costs, and some foods I should try to eat more of? Also, what are some of the better training methods that you guys have used

TIA

You just opened up a can of worms..

It all depends on what lifestyle you want. If it were up to me, I'd have you completely ditch grains. No bread, no rice, no pasta, etc etc. Fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts. Exercise.. go for long walks or runs 3-4 times per week, depending on what you're comfortable with, a sprinting session here and there, lift two or 3 times a week.

I'm far from an expert though

I'm not an expert either but what Hulk just said is what has worked for most of the people in here. The idea is to focus on whole foods, meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc. Stay away from a lot of processed stuff and definitely avoid heavily processed grains and sugar.

I think myth mentioned this earlier but when you are starting out, counting calories can be a huge help. You need to find out what your Basal Metabolic Rate is, you can find calculators for that online. Just find out how many calories your body is burning with no exercise, then shoot to eat a number below that, probably about 500 calories less per day. At that calorie level you should be losing a pound a week. Just remember to adjust it as you lose weight since you will burn less calories the smaller you get.

I wouldn't get too anal about the calories though. I find it harder to track each item I eat, looking up the exact thing online and tracking it, I just see how many calories it has then round it up or down in 50 calorie incrememnts and count it. It doesn't take much time and it's hard to screw up.

As far as exercise goes, just do what you are able to do. If you haven't worked out in a while, you need to build a minimum fitness base which may just be walking. Exercise is far less important than diet. Just do something you can stick with.

For tracking calorie/nutrient intake, I recommend www.myfitnesspal.com. There's even an app on iphone or android so you can keep track on the go. Comes with a built-in barcode scanner, too.

Cut out soda even if it's diet drinks IMO, as well as the other suggestions mentioned above.

Try to read through about the last 75-100 pages.
What the above posters said and I do most of my cardio on a Schwinn Airdyne. Rain or shine I can always workout. 30-40 min. I started out at 3 days a week for 15-20 min. Just work on getting your heart rate up a bit at first and gradually increase. The most important thing you can do is watch what you put in your mouth. Look at the Atkins or Paleo websites for diet ideas. It works. Good luck!!

So is it too late to jump in this? I went to the doctor yesterday for some sinus problems and although I got those taken care of, it opened a whole new can of worms in regards to weight and blood pressure. I wasn't overly pleased with either.

Right now, the plan in regard to bp is to lower sodium intake and completely cut out the little caffiene I have during the day. Obviously, weight loss will play a role too. I've considered low carb/no carb but I don't think it's sustainable in the long run for me. I know others here have had great success with it but I've always tended to fall off the wagon pretty quickly and need to kind of ease into something.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking calorie counting to start with and then maybe ease into something else once I've become comfortable with that.

Never to late to get in this thread. Welcome to the discussion. With help from this board I have lost 50 lbs, not only is there good advice but very supportive people in here. I don't see any problem with starting slow. Counting calories is a great first step. You'll notice which foods are high calorie types that don't feel you up (carbs) and the lower calorie types that you can eat more of ( protein). I suggest downloading my fitness pal on the iPhone if you can. Follow the instructions a choose your goals and you'll be on your way.

Just downloaded the fitness pal app. It looks very helpful, much more so than the Livestrong app.

Welcome BoredOne, I don't really worry too much about carbs other than processed grains. I'm with you, for me it would be harder to sustain it in the long term. Calorie restriction will definitely help.

I'm pretty much back down to my pre-vacation weight.

It's time to put the 260's in the rearview mirror.

I swear to god, if I don't hit 271 in the next day or two, I am gonna go on another long rant... I'm threatening my own body with that.....

Welcome boredone.. I hope you're ready for a journey. Frustrations, elations, lows, highs, and greatness. The most important thing is to find what works for you. Start out with calorie restriction, start with some light exercise.. get in a groove. You will start learning how foods affect your body

Back to back all time new low. Did a fast ystdy and had a great workout. Getting in the 170's is a milestone for me, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Its probably been about 25 years since I weighed this. To all the younguns in this thread, if this old fart can do it, you sure as hell can too. Most importantly my cardio health is also much, much better. This thread has been incredibly helpful and seeing other's successes, and sharing in the ups and downs, is very motivational. Keep up the good work all!!!

Lost 30 lbs reading this site a few months ago and have been stagnant ever since. I stopped eating good food and haven't put on a pound. I'm attempting to start back up, but my biggest nemesis is my mom's cooking. Any Ideas on healthy dinner recipes that I could make for this last few weeks of living at home so that I don't blow up?

TIA

So glad I found this! My biggest problem is getting exercise in. I leave my house at 6am and don't usually get home until 7pm most days so my best time to exercise is during the day on weekdays. So I've been thinking of getting some exercise in during my lunch break. Any suggestions that won't make me all sweaty and smelly?

@Coleygirl, not sure. Maybe some walking? Depends on how hot it is outside where you are or if you have access to a gym.

Walking would probably be your best bet.. although any form of exercise is going to make sweat a little
