I wouldn't say it doesn't help at all. I think most people just overestimate how much it can help.

its damn near useless. its like saying a 9 volt battery will help provide electricity for a skyscraper. i'm not wrong am i? that's a true statement.

ok lets play a game.
hypothetical :
you and I are both 6'0, 300lbs.
We eat & drink the exact same thing for 6 months straight. Meal for meal, day to day. Week to week.
But I work out 5 times a week. You don't workout at all.
Who is more likely to shed more pounds?

I know that exercise doesn't really contribute too much metabolically in the short term but it promotes a healthier body which is the purpose of weight loss. (Which you pretty much said)
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that building muscle will help you metabolically in the long run. (Granted, from what I've read even that seems to be overestimated by most people.)
Lol, as I build this argument in my mind I admit I can't disagree with you. It just seems extreme to say it has no effect or such a minimal effect as in your illustration. That might be my natural stubborness talking though.

I started in this thread probably 40-50 pages ago and everything has been peaceful and encouraging, the last two days have been confrontation and bickering. Put a group of people who have been starved of food in a room and the strongest shall survive.

CAD, I pondered putting the word grossly in front of overestimate when I posted that. Honestly your posts in this thread have shaped my opinion on this.

its healthy discussion if you don't let it insult like some (tygermyth, benchwarmer)

I don't feel that way Lester. In fact I don't think my post gave that impression. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.
Excercise isn't always going to make you lose weight because it can't just stand on it's own. The harder you work your body the more you have to feed it. If you are working out more often you can't really expect to get by on the same diet that was working to help you lose weight without working out. Your body needs extra fuel, especially to gain muscle.
So from that perspective I think CAD is right because you can't expect your body to do more work with the same amount of fuel it had working efficiently at a lower level of work. You can still create a favorable balance and lose weight but it may be harder to do so.
I guess what I mean to say is that this isn't a black and white issue. There's just too many variables.
