Preserving the Poorboy: a history of its desecration and road to preservation

New Orleans culture is under attack from those of many demonyms not New Orleanian. One can travel to Houston to Seattle, from Denver to Chicago, from Miami to Boston and supposedly find something called po-boy. National chains and local delis alike have under our noses attempted to plunder our heritage. Evildoers and outlanders try to masquerade hoagies, heroes, subs, and sandwiches as our cherished gift to the world.
Unfortunately, the demise of the poorboy began from within. Within 15 years of its creation from a labor strike, locals started besmirching the nation's great Labor inspired food. The two culprits? Parkway Bakery and Schwegmann's Grocery. The first example of local torpidity with the term was 1945. However, the bastardized term did not become popularized until 1947 when Parkway Bakery began selling the misnamed "po-boy." Schwegmann's Grocery followed suit in the coming years and before you know it, by the late 1950s, the poorboy was largely lost to the city's vernacular and conscience.
Lost was the great history of its birth in Labor. It took a great many decades and a hurricane for the masses to rediscover the poorboy. There are still some unlettered and uncouth who will use the term "po-boy", ah it pains me even to type those letters together. Thankfully, those numbers are diminishing daily as more and more people use the correct poorboy. In my circles nary a one will use the ghastly abbreviation.
As we embark on the poorboy's restoration, we must first ask what makes a poorboy a poorboy. It's not the filling or the toppings. It's the bread. Perhaps you have a better criterion. If you do, inform us.
I am moving to organize the International Poorboy Commission (IPC). If you would like to join, post here. Include your credentials and your motives for membership. Together, we will protect the great name of the poorboy by certifying bakeries. Only those who have the stamp of the IPC will be permitted to advertise that they sell poorboys.

Have you spoken to Mr. Fitzmorris to lead your commission?

You still eat these things?

You think New Orleans was the first place that people thought of putting meat on French bread?
Never mind, I didn't realize you were special needs.

Poorboy -> Po'boy -> Po-boy. That's how that happened.
What's a shame is that poboys have gone from being a cheap food for the masses to $20 for a sandwich.

I love them, but it's a sandwich, man. You shouldn't take it too seriously.

So what was the poor boy supposedly like before Parkway/Schwegmans changed it up?

A stop will be put on this with the quickness

Nah, I'll keep calling it a poboy considering every fricking person I say it to understands what I'm referring to.
Good luck on your crusade though, I'm sure you'll make some major wake. You should chain yourself to the pole outside the parkway bar doors and demand they pay for their crimes of the poorboy wars

This doesn't even make sense because parkway uses poorboy all over the place. And their website is literally parkwaypoorboys.com

New owners, what back in 2003 or 04?
The original owners back in the 40s popularized the term po'boy. I'm glad the Biloxi family that now owns Parkway has brought back the real name though.

So now that Parkway is settled, who are we going at now? Gene's is closed but we could still track down the owner and frick him up

You know what, I've never once eaten at Gene's. I had never heard of it until they put it up for sale couple of years ago.
Tell you what, I may require all poorboy shops that have in their names poboy or advertise poboys to change their names and advertisements before I will stop my tour bus at their establishments.

That's a good idea to help make it authentic. Another option, once you start doing the tours, would be to drive by the places that refused and publicly berate them over a loudspeaker. Something the guests can join in on too
