I rec'd a $100 gift card as a gift, went to brunch, check came to $60 with 20% tip, I gave waitress my gift card, she comes back and says she forgot to tell me that our gift card machine isn't working.

I personally think Portobella's is overpriced mediocre food, especially the $12 mixed drinks, I wouldn't eat there except for the gift card. so this pisses me off. I now have to pay for a not great brunch out of my own pocket.

To avoid this, we ordered take-out over the phone and told them we would be playing with a gift card, the person taking the order asks someone "is the gift card machine working today?", this time it was.

If you have one of these gift cards, I recommend that you check on the status on the 'gift card machine' before you order.

Not going to lie, that would piss me off too if it was a place that I wouldn't have chosen otherwise

Should have called the manager over and told them that you understand they can’t just take your word that you have 100 dollars on the gift card a d you would agree to pay cash for the meal if they would agree to refund your money for the meal and deduct it from the card once the machine was back up.

There’s not even a such thing. Gift cards are run through the POS.

I’d be pissed too.

Portabellos Bocage was taken over by the ex chef at Ruffinos and has a replica Ruffinos menu now. I dig it. But the other location is still regular Portabellos.

Even with the influence of the Ruffinos chef, Portobello’s is still overpriced crap.

I would have left the gift card and told them to apply it when it works. Screw that.

HA I would have told them I would be coming back to pay when it was then. Their fault for not notifying you BEFORE you ordered anything. Would have given mgmt my id info and left the card if needed. If mgmt still has the same attitude as it did when Ken, the father ran it they would have no issue with this.

Gumbo is decent there. I've tried several things on the menu, old & new menu items and it's just not that good. The pricing is ridiculous for the quality & taste of the food you get. Haven't tried the brunch. Cocktail prices are high as well.

I just moved about 5 min away from this location, and have found it to be pretty good. The GM has been very involved each time I've been...checking on customers, interacting with the the servers and bartenders, etc.

They won't win a Michelin Star or a James Beard award anytime soon, but saying it's "overpriced crap" is a little harsh IMO.

I think if the Johnson Rod on one of those goes out, it won't work.
