Pleasantly surprised by Duke's in Denham

Went there Saturday afternoon for dinner and the food was pretty good.
I had heard mixed reviews of this place before so I wasn't expecting the food to be so good.
Service, food quality and proportions were all on point.

I like it better than Don's, although that's not saying much.

I really like their seafood gumbo

I've never had anything I didn't enjoy. The owner seems to be a really good guy too who cares about the customers and the quality of his food too.

Well his grandfather started Don’s Seafood and Duke grew up in the old Baton Rouge Airline Highway location. He’s a World Champion oyster shucker and a great guy.
His gumbos, ettouffee and bisque are all those old recipes which are classics and as good or better than any others out there. He also has a broiled whole flounder that is another old throwback and it’s a great fish. It’s hard to find flounder anymore when it used to be a staple of those type places. His seafood platter is like going back in time for me-I used to go to lunch on Airline when I was a kid with my father and his friends and it was my order. They would have cocktails at Friday lunch and I would drive them. I was 13.
And an old off the wall good choice-hamburger steak. Just plain and simple and good as it gets. It’s like the OLD Piccadilly style.

You can buy all of those by the gallon. Used to be at Don’s about $50 but. I’m sure they are more now. His crawfish bisque whatever he charges is worth it. I used to give Don’s Bisque gallons for Christmas presents to a few friends. Might have to restart that tradition using Dukes.

Never had a bad meal or poor service there
Broiled shrimp is my go to
My mom gets the fried crab claws every visit

Ate at the Italian place around the corner from Duke's last weekend.
Sounds like it's time for another trip to Denham.

I like it for the most part. Can’t get past the fact that they serve breaded shrimp for their fried shrimp. No excuse for that in south La

I’ve been twice and had a great meal both times.

So to the three down voters, am I wrong? Maybe they no longer serve breaded shrimp and I wasn’t aware

If you went Saturday afternoon it was lunch not dinner. Glad you enjoyed it, I’ll have to try it out

Gonna check this place out tonight. What's their absolute best entrée?
I'm already sold on the seafood gumbo

It's good, so is Don's across the interstate. It's basically the same.
I prefer the Watson/N Denham location.

free hush puppies? first time i've ever seen that.
Baked crab cake was really good
sauteed crab claws were good
onion rings were pretty bland, no seasoning at all
seafood gumbo was good
Stuffed flounder was really good
bread pudding nearly put me in a coma.
nice casual, relaxed atmosphere.
excellent , friendly wait staff
Assuming the big guy at the end of the bar was an owner or someone in mgt?
Definitely a place we will revisit regularly. Maybe when crawfish aren't $6.99lb.
