Pet Food thread - Farmer’s Dog

I have a small shih tzu/yorkie mix, that is the pickiest dog I’ve ever seen. She is seven years old and has had intestine problems her whole life. It would get so bad, she wouldn’t eat for 2-3 days. She even would up in the hospital once, for near deadly levels of dehydration. There was only one dog food she would eat. Purina Incredi-bites. It’s a cheap canned dog food. It was the ONLY thing she would eat.
About a month ago, we decided to try Farmer’s Dog food. She loves it, and if you ever seen the commercial, where they claim their dog is more active/playful after being on this dog food, it is true. For the last year or so, she quit playing, just basically slept all the time. She’s a whole new dog. It’s amazing.
We did learn the beef Farmer’s Dog food doesn’t agree with her. She had a day or two where she didn’t eat after eating the beef. She does great on the chicken and turkey.
It does cost nearly double of what we were paying for the Purina, but she’s only 5 lbs, so it’s only a little over $2 a day now.

I wish I could feed my dog one of those fresh foods, but that bustard would eat me out of house and home.

we switched over to it about 2 months ago and our dog has really had a lot more energy, better shits, seems happier. It's made a noticable difference here too, no question.

my dogs eat raw food
I don’t know what kind it is it comes frozen in flat plastic packages
they like it
you can get venison, rabbit, etc in addition to the regular beef pork and poultry
helps with allergies greatly
I can see though if you have a very large dog that cost would be an issue. I have one little one and one medium one, they go thru 2 of the packages a day combined

We have 280 pounds of dog distributed over 16 paws and we go through almost 100 pounds of kibble a month. Fresh food would be a European sedan car payment per month.

You have 4 dogs and a middle class income. Okay. Noted

Farmer's Dog food is a raw dog food, and a fairly high quality one at that. If you are interested in the hows, and the whys, of a Raw Dog Food diet, the research can be quite interesting. Much of it can be done on YouTube alone. I switch my pup over to the raw dog food diet about two years ago. The price of the kibbles was going through the roof then so my wife and I decided why not? We decided to make the food our selves so we could control the costs better. For example, we make 50-60 pounds at a time for a 30 lbs. dog. While the pup is eating his way through that batch we shop for specials on meat and the other ingredients during that time. The savings can some times be significant. The only cost we don't figure into the price per pound is our labor, it takes about 4 hours to grind up all the meat and containerize it. We are both retired so labor goes into "Labor of Love" column on the balance sheet. The change in our dog was really remarkable, all the same changes as in the posts above, and it was very noticeable by week 2.

It is not raw, it's fully cooked.

We moved from kibble to homemade. We put 2 lbs turkey, 2 cups of frozen bag of mixed veggies, 1 cup of mixed frozen fruit, 2 cups rice, turmeric and water in a slow cooker and let it cook for 4 hours. At the very end we add 2 eggs to it and mix it in. We can typically find the turkey as a BOGO from Publix or other grocery store, so it's pretty economical to make. Considering a large bag of kibble for our dog was $80, we are spending close to the same but giving him a much healthier meal. Here's a picture of our puppy for the upvotes.

I am interested in your experience. I have a home freeze dryer and have been considering making our own dog food, but not certain where to start.

my wife made food for a long while...just like chips said ground protein, shredded/chopped veg and fruit, rice, eggs and whatever else is good for dogs. mine love blueberries and bananas.
its not that hard and if you have a freeze dryer, all the better.
i'm looking at getting this one soon

What would you like to know? I have never used a home freeze dryer so if you're planning on using that, maybe google something. I just googl'd "homemade dog food" and then took some ideas from there which got me thinking about other ideas.

Used to make a big pot of food every Sunday for mine once she got older and didn’t enjoy hard food as much. Brown rice, ground turkey, sweet potatoes, carrots and broccoli.

I have that Harvest Right medium freeze dryer. Let me know if you need any help when you get one. After a couple of years I've figured everything out.
