I wonder how many people who bitch about the cost of an $18 four pack have no problem going out and buying an $8 pint of beer at a restaurant or bar?
Apples and oranges.
How so?
You use the same money for the same beer.

I went to Parish this past Saturday and got 3 4-packs of Attacus and 2 of the DDH Blood Orange Envie. They charged 14 a pop and my receipt was just a flat cost, no tax. That's the same amount people pay in the grocery store for Ghost. What kinda profit are they getting at these brewery releases??

I'm far more excited for maple shade than DDH GITM
GITM, DDHE, Nova, and all the parish beers are all pretty similar to me. I can't wait to try the Maple Shade...

Well, for starters, Chimes East is like 3 miles from my house whereas to grab some brewery releases I have to drive out to Broussard. Consider it a "convenience fee", plus the reasons TH03 listed above, I expect to pay much higher prices for a pint of beer at a restaurant or bar. The reason I say it's apples and oranges is you're comparing prices straight from the brewery or store to a restaurant or bar, which is always going to be higher.

So $18 for 48oz of DDH Ghost at Parish (tax included). How much beer do you get at Bulldog for that same $18? Two pints, if you're lucky.

They get $14 from you at the brewery. They don't get $14 from the grocery store, they'll get $10-12 or so depending on what margin the store runs at.

But you're missing my point. Nobody bats an eye paying $7.70 plus tip ($7 beer, 70 cents tax) on a pint of Envie at Chimes East, of which the brewery gets about 50 cents. But we draw the line at $4.50 for a bottle of much more rare beer that the brewery gets to keep all the revenue?
Everyone falls all over themselves to buy $11 bottles of BCBS or $20 4-packs of KBS or $22 bottles of CBS, but Parish is the ones out of line here?

You're paying the direct cost the brewery wants to charge for their beer. No extra money on top to pay the bar's power and water bills or help pay for their liquor license.
Same reason I can buy 4 prime steaks at Costco for $60 but they cost double at a nice steakhouse.

I'm not drawing a line, just making the distinction clear.

This would be a better comparison to make your point and I agree with you.

Agreed, B.
I also want to point out that Parish will not undersell their retailers, so they will charge as much, or more at the brewery than the retailers will charge for the same beer. Obviously, that makes for a much higher profit margin for them, but it also means that people won't be coming to the brewery to buy the beer cheaper than they can get it at the local retailer.
It's pretty universal that breweries won't screw over their retailers. That's no different than with any product. You can usually find a better deal at the retail store than at the manufacturer.

Yep. I sell a local wine here in the area and the price in my accounts is cheaper than the winery. People will leave the winery after a tasting, go into the grocery store down the street, and load up.

I do think $18 is kinda steep... I'd probably be more willing to pay it if I didn't have to drive and hour and a half to get it. With that said, I'm going to try to make it this weekend

I will gladly spend $18 for great beer. It's not like I'm going out and buying a four pack of this stuff every other day or something.
Do people in the "too expensive" crowd ever go to a bar or restaurant and order a beer? You'd be hard-pressed to find any non-BMC beer at a restaurant for less than $4.50.
ETA: just realized this conversation already occurred

We just got finished with Summer of Ghost where a 4 pack could be had for $10.99.
I can see some getting sticker shock at $18 a 4 pack.

But its the same money and actually costs more at the chimes. Seems silly to draw a line in the sand when you are obviously willing to pay more. To each their own.

The money is the same and the beer is the same. I don't care about overhead costs for a restaurant. It isn't the same to compare a steak for instance, because there is preparation that goes into cooking the steak for you. The beer is the beer regardless where you get it.
If I'm willing to pay $8-9 dollars for a beer at a restaurant or a bar, it would be silly for me to turn my nose up at the same beer priced at $4.50 from the brewery.

$16.44 + 9.5% = $18.00 @ the source. $4.11 for a world class beer is cheap. Across the country small brewery’s are collecting $25 for similar beer.

If you buy draft, they have to tap the kegs, clean the lines, etc
