I thought Parish was sought after in LA. Is it really likely that I bought something that's old?

sure, why not? Stone Enjoy By is sought out too, but I've seen times where the Enjoy By date was 6 months prior.

True, but they weren't always as big as they are now. I doubt they got to where they are by having a bunch of "meh" beers in their regular line-up

People have provided a perfectly acceptable and accurate justification for this but I guess you aren't bothering to actually read it. Bread-and-butter brews, your cash cow brews -- those are essential. That's what gives you the revenue to expand and make those one-offs more regular. Ham said it earlier, if all they did was Ghost, Hoptagon, et al. they'd go under in no time flat.

I repeat, you NEED those brews to keep you afloat for a start up. Maybe once you're established you can phase them out to a degree, but for now it's essential to the business model.

Dale's Pale Ale by Oscar Blues comes to mind as a solid pale ale

Technically Dale's is an IPA. I believe Pale Ale's top out at 45 IBU's. Dale's is 65.

Your view of what constitutes someone as a "hipster" is way off. A hipster would be the opposite of what you are saying and would like Parish just because it's local and you can't get it everywhere and not because they like the taste. A hipster would bash breweries like Dogfishhead because they "sold out" by being featured in Beer Wars.

I guess, by big, i'm going as far as notoriety on a local level. Of course i'm not comparing them to dogfish, founders, or abita.

But the hate it gets, because it's revered by locals, seems very hipsterish.

I try every beer with an open mind. Maybe my expectations were a little too high based on the reception this brewery gets here.

Well taste is subjective. Not everyone likes everything. I personally don't drink canebrake. It's just not my style. But it's a solid beer for what it is. It's not your typical summer wheat. it's a malty wheat reinforced with cane sugar. So it's going to be malty.

Envie is a pale ale. If you are comparing it to dale's, then you are comparing apples/oranges. If you want to compare properly, compare with:

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale = 38 IBU's
Sweetwater 420 = 40-45 IBU's

SUB, If you live in Austin and have the luxury of their beer distribution/selection, I can agree with you. I would probably not drink much Parish if I could drink Firestone Walker, Bear Republic, Lagunitus, Dale's ETC.... We are limited and Parish is head and shoulders better than abita's regulars and any other in the State IMO.

However you def had a bad Canebrake if it tasted like Miller light. I get Envie fresh and it's a great beer, FWIW it doesn't sell as much as Canbrake because mainstream drinkers can't handle the hops.

True, but I see a good brewery as more than just a brewery who has a few good big bottle releases. AKA Deschuttes. I've liked everything that I tried from them, and their limited stuff is also really good, such as Abyss and Butte.

Dude, how can you compare a brewery that started in 1988 with one that started in like 2012? Seriously?

Exactly. SUB, i think you are putting your expectations much too high in comparing a new craft brewery, to a 26 year old brewery.

Really?? I have never see any 'hate' towards Parish on this board.

In fact it's often the exact opposite. Someone will post something negative about Parish or one of their beers and everyone will pile the frick on them until they go away.

IMO Parish is a good to average brewery in a state of average to below average breweries... Being the best brewery in Louisiana is like being the skinniest kid at fat camp.

No fan base eats it's own more than LSU fans. I guess it's no surprise to see the same attitude prevail in areas outside of sports too

Vinnie will retire at RR. Matt Brynildson can be bought with a lucrative contract and TV deals.
