To sum things up, the point of this thread was to understand why people like this brewery so much. I've had two of the three regular line-up and wasn't super impressed. I may have had a bad canebrake, because the one I had in a bottle last year was definitely better. Envie on the other hand, just didn't have the hops I was looking for. Maybe it is unfair to compare it to Dale's, but someone else mentioned Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and Envie doesn't come anywhere close to being that good. Maybe I had a bad Envie too?

People have suggested that I try some of the other big bottle beers from Parish. I would love to and will try to get my hands on one once they are easier to get.

I'm not impressed by any LA breweries as of yet.

But my favorites of the bigger craft breweries include Founders, Deschutes, Dogfish Head, Stone, and Oscar Blues.

A couple local Austin breweries that have some great stuff are Thirsty Planet and Hops & Grain.

Seriously, I don't think anyone, even the homers, put them near that level.

Pretty asinine to expect that type of beer out of a self made brewery that's just a few years old.

Calm down. You asked me what breweries I like. You didn't ask "what breweries should be compared to Parish?"

So you are saying that Parish is pretty mediocre? The Austin breweries that I mentioned are as good or better than some of the other big breweries that I listed, and they are just as small as Parish. According to you, they shouldn't be able to make good beer because you think that small breweries are somehow incapable of making good beer. Because more money always = better beer. Right?

ETA: And do you think all those big craft breweries that I mentioned just instantly struck it big? No. I don't really understand what point you are trying to make by saying it's not fair to compare a beer from a new brewery to a beer from an established brewery. Yes, Parish doesn't have the resources to distribute its beer all over the country, but it certainly has resources to make good beer.

I disagree. Plenty of small start-ups out there that make incredible beer.

My counterpoint is market. Craft beer is not prevalent enough in LA that niche brews can carry a brewery. Gotta establish a consumer base before you can drop the more exciting styles on them.

Youre limited by what people will buy. If Parish did all DIPAs, sours, and barrel aged stuff it would sit on shelves amd hurt the profit margin. The same profit margin that allows them to brew those more interesting beers.

Look around -- all the other LA brewers are using the same strategy. Its not indicative of collective stupidity, its indicative of being aware of your consumer base.

I get what you are saying but I'm not even talking about the dipas and barrel aged stuff. I'm comparing one pale ale or wheat to another.

What you are saying is that Louisiana beer drinkers like dumb downed versions of brews. So LA brewers are inclined to brew those kinds of beers. I'm not sure if I agree. Maybe 10 years ago, but not today.

Usually the exception and not the rule. Not saying it can't be done, but blowing away the competition is not a staple of upstart breweries.

Hopefully GitM will stay on the shelf long enough to get a little dust on it.

Finally got around to grabbing a growler of Parish's Ghost in the Machine double IPA.

Wow. Terrific offering. Best beer brewed in Louisiana in my view and would definitely hold its own with any of the well-known DIPAs out there.

What do you mean by this? This beer hasn't been on tap for quite some time.
