Not much detail but that short lived smokehouse place in Bucktown that closed down is getting replaced by Thai.
Bold move.
"Bucktown, largely dominated by seafood restaurants, will soon be home to Mama Thai. The restaurant will be taking over the space which was most recently home to Smoke House Grill and probably best known as Carmine’s pre-Veterans Blvd. location."

I have been trying to find out who is behind this for a while, but no one has any info. It could be a family friendly thai street food concept which I think would do really well there.

This could actually work in this location. High margin food items with a strong clientele in the area. Also a unique place for Asian food in this area where it is lacking.

I wonder if it could be Diana Chauvin's place. When she closed La Thai, she said she wasn't going to go away completely.
The reason this popped into my head is they had something called "Mama Sauce" that was used in the Mee Grob and the Duck Delight.

I saw an older Asian couple scoping that place out a couple weeks back. I'm assuming its going to be the standard pad thai and curry thai restaurant. I think that would be a great thing as there really isn't another option for thai near there. I imagine Equator would be the closest.

That's gotta be one of the more snakebit locations in the metro area. How many restaurants have been in that space?

Alot. But they have been run of the mill places that aren't any different than the established restaurants in LV/Buck/Met.
I think this one has a real shot if it's decent to good Thai food.

It may survive if it’s legit Thai because there isn’t much else close other than Cafe Equator

Thai Ocha is a tad closer and pretty legit IMO. Haven't been to Cafe Equator though.

That was my theory on the family friendly thai street food concept. I am almost certain that this is it, but I can't confirm.

It’s going to be her restaurant

Great to hear. That is exciting news. The area needed more legit Asian options. She will crush it there.

Sounds like it’ll draw some influence from La Thai but will be it’s own unique concept

working on a more casual restaurant idea for the future that will focus on Thai street food
I think the menu will be closer to their nit noi menu:

I would expect some versions of noodle soup and crab fried rice too.

I just ate at Thai Ocha today. Very good spicy drunken noodles, and a nice little place. Looking forward to trying Mama's.
