Pretty decent.

You don't really taste the alcohol at all in spite of its higher than normal %.

Don't taste the vanilla at all though. It pretty much just tastes like a stronger turbodog (durrr).

Really didn't like that first sip, tasted fairly bitter, but it grew on me fast.

I had a Vanilla Doubledog the other day and it was OK. Probably won't have another one. I'm not much of a "Big Beer" drinker though. Would much prefer a Turbodog.

picked up a few last night. ehhh.. it isnt bad, but not what I was hoping for. the vanilla porter they tested with at the chimes earlier in the year was much much better.

I enjoyed the Smoky Mary... had it at Avenue Pub while waiting on the Zwanze day festivities. I thought it was a pretty good smoked beer but yeah, nothing revolutionary. I would drink it again for sure.

Me too

I actually liked how the smokiness was understated. Other smoked beers I've had tasted artificial, almost like they put liquid smoke in them. This was nice if you're in the mood for smoked beer but overall as a beer nothing I'd drink often.

Heading to Nola tonight. Can I find the Smoky Mary or Vanilla in any bars yet?

Avenue Pub has Smoky Mary for sure... a few other places probably do as well. Don't know about the Vanilla Doubledog in bars.

The Double Dog is only sold in those 22 oz bottles, correct? The Bulldog and Avenue Pub have the Smoky Mary.

That is correct. I couldn't even get it on tap at the Abita Brewpub this weekend, so I don't think they are kegging it at all. They do keg the other "Big Beers".

Probably on draft too I would think? Maybe not, not positive.

Just out of curiosity, does the bottle design look like an Ed Hardy or Affliction t-shirt to anyone else?

I can't remember ever seeing Abbey Ale or SOS on tap, only Andygator (maybe SOS).

The Brew Pub has SOS on tap and I saw it at The Bulldog once or twice, but not recently.

I'll be at the Brew Pub on Saturday, so I'm hoping to have some there. Or some Triple Haze. Or both.

That was my main thing.

I wanted a much stronger vanilla flavor to it.

had the smoky mary at Midway last night.. and it's pretty nasty, but I think I just don't like the style. I've had a couple smoked beers before and thought they were nasty as well, but this one is probably a little less nasty if that helps

Had Smoky Mary this weekend and it is by far the worst beer by NOLA. I like all of their other brews quite a bit. I was very disappointed. Not as bad as that Bayou Teche Boucanee, but that's not saying much. IMO smoked beers that aren't dark dont have the right balance and the smokiness is just offensive to me. Smoky Mary has just a touch of smokiness whereas the Bayou Teche tastes like plastic bandaids.

I thought the Smoky Mary was decent and I really like the Boucanee... definitely not for everyone though.

Still haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Boucanee

Out of the bottle I think this is gross but once you pour it into a glass I kind of dig it.

For me to enjoy smoked beers I need to be in the right environment. Either eating something that matches or on a fall/wintery evening.

I agree, esp w/ the food pairing, otherwise it's just overpowering.

I think I like Smoky Mary better than Boucanee and the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock. I had all three within a few days and enjoyed Smoky Mary the most as a drinker. Urbock and Boucanee would have been better with a meal of smoked meats.
