I keep pouring 6 cups of water into the carafe and then into the coffee maker, but then the pot only fills up with 5.5 cups of coffee. What's up with that?

ETA I know some can be lost due to water vapor, but I feel like half a cup is a lot of water lost due to vapor. At least with older pots I've never seen a discrepancy this big.

I have one of those Hamilton Beach 12 cup/single cup makers. Got it like less than a month ago. It's making some kind of weird clicking sound now.

Condensation is where water turns to vapor when heated.

I've never seen a pot lose half a cup to water vapor before.

I'm sure some is still in the reservoir and didn't get picked up by the pump as well. Turn it upside down and see how much comes out.

My pot has two marks next to each cup. One shows where to fill it up to and the other shows where it will be after it brews. It's basically a half cup difference. You are losing some to evaporation and some that gets absorbed into the coffee that doesn't come out.

Interesting, thanks fellas. A combination of all these things makes sense to me. I guess I'll just fill it half a cup more every time. I just wanted to make sure something wasn't faulty.

It's not water vapor. Those little dark things you put in the filter soak up a lot of water. The more coffee grinds go in, the less coffee water comes out.

Some evaporates but not that much the rest is split most trapped in the grains notice how much heavier they were than before?? Das da water. also a small amount runns back down into the reservoir where ya can hear it gargle and hiss away. half a cup sounds about right to me. No worries.

Also consider water absorbed by the coffee filter. We use 2 filters (above and below coffee grounds) and this seems to eliminate grounds getting into coffee pot.
I always add a little extra water to compensate.

We use a Bunn A-10 and always get the same out as we put in. We only add water in 4 cup increments (4+4+2 = 10 cups)to prevent grounds from getting into the coffee. Your loss of 1/2 cup of water has to be due to evaporation. I would suggest your coffee maker is too hot. The Bunn and other brands brew at an optimum temperature below the boiling point of water.
