Need Chicago help: Alinea

I've never been to Chicago but love NYC. So we have a table at Alinea and therefore will be visiting Chicago for a few days. What other suggestions do you guys have as far as where to get great food, where to stay, what else to do. I don't need super high end in light of Alinea. Maybe neighborhood type places. Would like to try their pizza and maybe Italian one night. I don't care about steak houses as I can get that anywhere.
Thanks in advance

Blackbird is a solid place for lunch. Publican is good. As is Owen and Engine. And Cindy's is a fun brunch, with good views of the city (food is not fantastic, but not too shabby). Au Cheval has a fantastic burger. Purple Pig is great. Just a few ideas.

definitely Purple Pig. Place is awesome. Get reservations.
Volare for old school Italian is really good.
Roister for brunch.

La Scrola for Italian(veal parm is off the menu but awesome). I tried Volare right before I left the chi and loved it as well, but it was during Restaurant week.
Twin anchors is a true neighborhood joint and been around for a LONG time. Great ribs.
Like homie said above, if willing to wait, Au Cheval will be the best burger you have had.
I know you said you can get a steak anywhere, but I would consider going to Bavettes. It is my favorite place to eat. If you go, get the bone in ribeye.

all great suggestions but I'd skip the pizza
two bites and you'll be wishing you'd eaten something else

I always enjoy Piccolo Sogno on Halsted St. for rustic Italian with large outdoor patio dining. Dinner at Alinea will be amazing...it's an experience I've never forgotten. When in Chicago I always choose to stay at the Peninsula. It's centrally located with over-the-top service.

Duck duck goat, Chef Stephanie Izard's newest restaurant. It is fantastic Chinese food. We went there for dinner and walked the few blocks to Girl and the goat for dessert. Highly recommend doing that.

Sorry about that.

For Italian/pasta, Monteverde is knocking it out of the park right now...
The Arrabbiata and Gnochetti con Pesto were two of the best pasta dishes I've had in a long time.
I second most of the above recs like:
Girl & the Goat
Duck Duck Goat
Au Cheval
Purple Pig
Cindy's (for drinks)
Pequod's (if you do deep dish)

Can someone bump the last chicago recommendations thread from a week or two ago?

Was there last week and had outstanding beer and pizza at Piece Brewery & Pizzeria in Wicker Park. Also enjoyed a quality happy hour near the Art Institute at The Gage.

My GF loves Piece, but it's definitely not chicago deep dish. Cool place though.

We clicked their online reservation system the minute they went live releasing their next block of reservations and the only option was a 5pm seating and a 10 pm seating. We took the 5pm then checked again (2 minutes later) and they were all gone. I think they open one or 2 week blocks at a time like 2 months ahead. Strange protocol but I guess it works for them. I'm just glad to be going.
Thanks everyone for the recs, just what I was looking for.

Boka is world class. Cannot recommend highly enough if you're looking for another fine dining experience after Alinea (very jealous).
