My Foodie Weekend in Houston w/ Pics

Wanted to share some photos from the gluttonous weekend I just had in Houston. The visit was basically only for eating and drinking, which I'm paying for in exhaustion now, but it was a really great time.
First up, Uchi. Went here years ago the night before the LSU-Wisconsin game, and it was great so it has always been on the list to go back. They have a 6 course Omakase or a 10 course, but we decided to just tell the server what style of food we like to eat and let him decide. We told him we will let him know when we are ready to tap out.
In total, we had 14 courses brought to the table for the 2 of us. I tapped out at 9, unfortunately.
First course is some nigiri. I believe these were the flounder, topped with lemon zest (left) and the Japanese sea bream which is topped with a basil sort of sauce.
I don't remember what most of the stuff was anymore, so bear with me. This next course I think was a cooked flaky white fish, and it was topped with a yuzu marmalade and fried garlic.
I think this is yellowtail, ponzu, thai chili, and orange supreme.
This next course is thinly sliced flounder, candied quinoa, and olive oil.
Salmon belly I believe on the left. Threadfin bream on the right. These were awesome.
This is the kanpachi crudo with asian pear, shiro zu, and tomato
This is the scallop crudo with aguachile verde, cucumber, and granny smith apple. It was so fresh. Very cucumber heavy. Enjoyed it a lot.
These are your three funkier, oily fish. That's his favorite. I skipped the mackerel, but I ate half of the other two. The cuttlefish was hands down my favorite.
This is one we specifically asked for off the menu because we had never had it -- Founder fin muscle. It is just slightly seared. Holy crap it was good.
This is my last course before tapping out, and was another I ordered from the menu. This is chopped fatty tuna with caviar. It was incredible. Fried garlic on top.
We had this on our first visit, and were glad to have them serve it again. Roe with a quail egg.
This one is the anchovies course. Looks like marcona almonds, and I believe the golden pieces were raisins.
Second to last course was a few more pieces of nigiri, and then the final course which I didn't get a photo of was a mushroom nigiri that was sweet like a dessert.
Next place we visited was State of Grace. Big oyster eaters, so figured this would be a good daytime lunch.
Started with 24 oysters: 6 Copps Bay, 6 Murder Point, 6 Whale Rock, and 6 prestige.
Scallop crudo
Campechana (like the Mexican seafood cocktail... this one had shrimp and octopus and avocado). It was so sweet and better than I expected.
Pansotti. Because of the season, this one is filled with what is basically ground Mexican street corn. Ricotta, saffron, tomato, cotija, and honey.
This is half. I love when restaurants split items into separate plates when you're sharing.
Two more dozen Murder Points to end things. The wine and cocktails here were great as well.
The server at State of Grace might be the best server we have ever sat with in our lives. He gave us no less than 5 hugs each after the meal as we were finishing up. That person deserves all the promotions in the world.

Next meal was a return visit to Georgia James. Not posting photos of wine/drinks here, but posting this because the bread in the background is worth mentioning. Rather than butter, they give you rendered down fat for dipping. Very healthy, haha. It was delicious.
Here we have the shishito peppers with shaved wagyu short rib
I was a bit tipsy at this point, and didn't get any side dishes in photos. I know the mushrooms stood out a good bit.
I ordered the Wagyu Zabuton as my entree. It was perfectly cooked.
I have no idea what this is. Looks like a ribeye, so let's go with that It had been a long day.
Coffee and desserts
The next day, we were struggling to say the least. Lunch planned at Ostia, and we didn't go very hard here. We had a Margherita pizza, which was outstanding. We also had a pistachio-ramp pesto fusilli pasta which had house made sausage and cheese.
And a bloody mary to try and come back to life.
Our final two meals this same evening.. Hugo's for dinner and MAD for dessert (what I knew would be the highlight of the trip)
Mexican wouldn't be my first choice, but I've been to Houston so many times without going to Hugo's, so we decided to go ahead.
The margaritas were strong, so that's plus
The starters were great. The ceviche is on the left, and the octopus is on the right. The octopus was a real winner.
For our meal, we shared the seafood and chicken rice dish. This was awesome. The sauce was so rich.
Finally, the place I was excited about -- MAD. MAD is located in this shopping center in River Oaks where we spent a good half hour gawking at cars and stores. I'm not rich or trendy enough, or young enough, for this area. And I loved every minute of it
MAD is themed like a circus, which really whimsical decor. They had a live DJ spinning tunes and we had 2 spots reserved up at the bar.
Had to make a bathroom trip because the hallway was cool. I'm not the chick fixing herself in the mirror.
The cocktail were great. A spicy marg.. I had 2 espresso martinis that were served on nitro.. a pour of Clase Azul.. and finally a couple glasses of Caymus. We crashed after the trip.
Being that we came here for dessert, we got two of them.
First was the Huevos Voladares, which was a passion fruit pastry that was incredible. I love passion fruit anything.
Next, we tried to order the black garlic meringue, but the bartender steered us to this manchego lava cake. I'm so glad it did because it was delicious.
My own photo is blurry, so here's one I pulled online.
Overall, great food weekend. Visited some fun bars in town as well during the day between meals. You Houston folks are way luckier than us BR ones.

Absolute great restaurant line up. Love them all. Have y’all tried Bludorn or Squable yet? If not, I recommend that on your next visit.

Squable
Came very close to doing this one when I was planning. I haven't done it or Rosie Cannonball yet, which are on my list.
Wasn't familiar with Bludorn. Will look into it.
Did Nancy's Hustle last time we were in town, which was great.

Rosie is great. They have Foccacia that is worth the trip alone.
Bludorn is owned by Aaron Bludorn, who was on Final Table on Netflix. They have a pastry chef from The French Laundry. He married Victoria Pappas, of the Pappas group. It’s definitely been the hottest restaurant of the last 5-6 months. They have a whole Lobster Pot Pie that is insane. Great quail dish, grey short rib ravioli dish.
Edit: also look at Xin Chao if you haven’t been. Christine Ha is the chef..she’s blind. It’s fantastic stuff.

Yall went hard as usual.
Though, I think the only thing I would be interested in eating were those steaks.

Its been far too long since I've had a weekend where we just ate and drank
and its been even longer since the last time we went to Uchi, which has always been one of my favorites (although Uchiko might be better)
I'm jealous and bitter

I had these dishes a few months back...I though everything I had at Bludorn needed a touch of salt.

Awesome lineup, LL. I want everything you posted, except for the passion fruit. I can't stomach it.
I love octopus and that one looks unbelievable so I'm jealous.
