I plan on purchasing Maryland Blue Crabs for my wife's birthday. If you have ordered (shipped) those before and had a good experience, who do you use?

I assume you know that the vast majority of “#1 Maryland Blue Crabs” come from Louisiana ? The Louisiana brokers ship almost all of their #1 crabs to Maryland.

Where are you? I can just drive down the road and buy a dozen #1s for $40.

Do you order them already boiled/steamed?
With any seafood generally the closest point they are harvested to you then the better they will be.

Probably not a good question for a Louisiana based site.

That’s the other main state that supplies blue crabs to Maryland lol

Correct. I live in Charlotte. Was going to call around the local seafood stores, but really wanted something from the waters of Maryland. Learn something new every day.

No doubt.
I had to disabuse my neighbors (from Detroit) of the idea that they'd find "fresh" snow crab legs in the FL Panhandle (or anywhere south of Anchorage, really).

I'd like an answer to your question because I live in Ohio and want to do some Blue Crabs

Anyone want to go in on renting a refrigerated truck with me?
I got a guy in St. Bernard who can load us down with nice #1s at a decent price. We got NC and Ohio. If we can get few more stops along the way it could be worthwhile.

We need the outdoor board cooler guy to handle planning the route, and I think we could get it done.

Follow up question, where do you go to get them from the fishermen? Is there a dock or just down a bayou road? I'm near BR but don't mind a drive.

Friend,
I love road trips and know you to be an honest fellow, so count me in! My only three requests are that we take the backroads and use the interstate as little as possible, stop at Walmart for several bottles of Diet Dr. Thunder, or DDT as you know it, and avoid as many bridges as possible.
This could be quite a journey and we could do a daily update for the Food Board. We could even consider spending a few days in Grand Isle and catching our own crabs. Please keep me informed.
Yours,
TulaneLSU
P.S. The people of Maryland are hypersensitive about their crabs. They think they have the best crab and crabbing waters in the world. If you ever chance upon www.bluecrab.info you will find the most arrogant commercial and recreational crabbers you will ever meet.

That’s what I am learning from this thread

My wife is from Silver Spring, MD. I grew up in Louisiana and have fond memories of crab boils with my Grandfather in Metairie.
If your roadtrip materializes, post a method for those of us along your route to place an order. I could drum up some additional business from other refugees located in the Queen City.
